About 150 People Stranded On Cruise Ship After Suspected Hantavirus Outbreak

"The couple were Dutch birdwatchers, not garbage collectors.  They visited a landfill in Ushuaia, Argentina, specifically to observe rare Patagonian birds, such as the White-bellied Seedsnipe, which are attracted to the waste site.
Authorities believe Leo and Mirjam Schilperoord contracted the deadly Andes strain of hantavirus from infected rodents at the dump before boarding the MV Hondius cruise ship.  The husband died on the ship, and his wife died shortly after disembarking in South Africa."

Cruise ship safety questions are now being raised. Are they really Petri dishes on the high seas? Another cruise ship excursion was cancelled due to a norovirus outbreak.

Why did not the ship's doctor use PPE to avoid contracting any type of disease as losing the doctor in an isolation event would be catastrophic. They were lucky one of the passengers was a doctor and had stepped up to tackle this outbreak on ship. It seems to me that ship's protocols need to be looked at under a microscope and prevention protocols be put in place. Are cruise ships really Petri dishes? It would appear they are.

"Dr. Stephen Kornfeld, an American oncologist from Bend, Oregon, assumed the role of de facto head doctor on the MV Hondius after the vessel’s own physician contracted hantavirus and fell critically ill. " (LLM)

My Mum, my younger brother, and his two kids, are off on a 3-week cruise around the Mediterranean come June 1st.

I think I'll stick to a couple of weeks of glamping in Arisaig this year...

As to cruise ships being a Petri dish, well, anywhere people are tightly packed together for a duration and cannot freely leave, probably constitutes such imho.

Then again, airplane journeys also tick that box i suppose.

Same with public transport.

Yeah, I've been asked to go with a family member on a cruise, but now, nope, sorry. As an elderly person I really can't take that risk because, in the news, another cruise ship had to cancel their excursion because of a norovirus outbreak.

As for airplane flights, well I've seen videos of where people chose to disinfect their seat and surrounding area because it is well known that they do not clean the interior passenger seat/area after each flight. If I had to fly, I'd bring disinfectant wipes and wipe everything down and wear PPE...if I had to fly.

Thank goodness I have access to cars to conduct my personal shopping/business/appointments.

Breaking News....
Quote:British paratroopers lead airdrop onto Tristan da Cunha for suspected hantavirus case

Now call me cynical, but when MOD get involved with medical stuff..... something smells very fishy. I remember Boris telling us not to worry during the first week of lockdown as a sample had been sent to Porton Down!!!
Quote:British paratroopers have dropped onto Britain's most remote overseas territory, Tristan da Cunha, along with medics and medical supplies, after a case of suspected hantavirus was confirmed there.
A team of six paratroopers and two military clinicians from 16 ‌Air Assault Brigade jumped from an RAF A400M transport aircraft that flew 6,788 km (4,218 miles) from RAF Brize Norton air base in Oxfordshire to Ascension Island then another 3,000 km due south to Tristan da Cunha.

If they are Australian i have to ponder where else they are expected to go aside from back home?

This one is scary because of the incubation period(up to 8 weeks).

Hopefully, they are properly isolated and monitored accordingly...

Plot twist, our state premier was the health minister when we locked down for covid and only opened up when he was replaced.

They have pretty much left him out of the loop as far as how Im reding the media.

I don't know anything about the fella, mate.

But COVID spreads mainly from person to person through airborne transmission.

Hantavirus(HPS) usually spreads by inhaling dust contaminated with infected rodent urine.

As far as i can tell, hantavirus is a lot harder to contract from other infected humans compared to COVID.
