The aim of the visit by Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz and Donald Tusk was to put pressure on Trump to admit that Putin was stalling, and that the US had no political option but to put swingeing economic sanctions on Russia.
The Republican senator Lindsey Graham has prepared a sanctions package that has broad congressional support.
Foreign ministers had also been in Lviv on Friday in a bid to put pressure on Russia, including by saying plans existed to try Russian leaders for the crime of aggression in front of a special tribunal. The UK had announced further sanctions on the Russian shadow fleet.
Partly due to Trump’s intervention, the UK has now postponed further measures due to be announced on Monday, but the EU is continuing with its plans for another package of sanctions later this month.

The conspirist in me says maybe an attempt on Putins life. Either that or its going to be used as propaganda in some way to drag out more support for their side. Either way I think its doubtful he attends especially with all the talk from zelensky about him being afraid and all that. Putin is not dumb and has a background as a KGB officer...I don't think manipulation and such is going to fare well against him. Right now as of this afternoon the lines seem to be moving very well in Russia's favor. I suspect all this rush to peace is happening now because the collapse of Ukraine's military is imminent and western analyst know it and have communicated as much to zelensky.

Yeah, that's the first thought that crossed my mind, too. If so, it's such an amateurish attempt. There's no reason for Putin to be there, especially so early in the talks. I haven't seen where the front lines are. I'll take a temporary ceasefire, but yes, if he gets no financing, it's inevitable. 

The 7 times larger Russia wore them down just as most thought would happen.
