I've been reading through the service manual ( HERE) and the first thing I would ask is, has anything electrical recently been installed on the same electrical system as the heat pump? Something that is using power may trip the system of the heat pump if there isn't enough current available. This is often a common problem when someone fits a dishwasher but doesn't allow enough current for them to work if anything else is using curret at the same time. Electricians understand things like this but kitchen fitters may not.
If the heat pump has it's own designated supply, then...
have you tried the simple approach first by making sure the POWER IS OFF and then checking as many connections as possible forin the heat pump to assure there are no short circuits or weak connections. There is a lot of info in the manual I link to and it even has wiring diagrams. Could also be moisture has got into the system somehow.
Keep us informed, stay warm, and at least you have your wifey to keep you warm.

I'm betting it's the run capacitor, but since it's still under warranty, I don't want to do anything that might void it. The breakers are all new, installed when the unit was installed 3 years ago.

Yeah just thought of warranty. How fast is the breaker tripping? I re edited my original post with everything I can think of. If you change out the breaker real quick you will at least narrow it down. I dont like guessing or calling expensive people when im unsure of where the problem actually is. Im kind of anal about it lol
For what it's worth warranty sounds like good news to me! Turn your broiler on! I know we arent suppose to but it gets so cold inside my house I dont have a choice just for an hour

It's only 3 years old and has a 5 year warranty, so I'm gonna let the techs do it because it would void the warranty if I did anything to it.

The breaker trips instantly - it won't even engage, just trips as soon as you try it.

Do they not have them in the UK ?
I just looked it up. You guys can get £7500 grant from the govt to upgrade your current system.

Yup we do, but you have to fork out twice that amount and then claim back the 'grant'. So £14,500 outlay first!
All new builds have to have them, part of our 'Green Agenda'.
I know a few people who went in on them and one person who moved into a new build. Let's just say they don't do what it says on the can. Plus, the one a friend has is so bloody noisy out in the garden!

An instant trip is a bad breaker or a dead short. A capacitor would take a few seconds to trip no matter if it is one on the compressor or fan motor. Having a second trip outside in the op, I would say the unit itself has a dead short.
Cound be a simple problem with the wiring in the outside unit but the wait on the service call is the hard part at those temperatures.
I know too much and question everything.
Does anyone know the minimum safe distance of ignorance?
Did anyone ask the monkeys how much fun the barrel actually was?
