Good Horror Films.
I haven't seen it yet, but I got A VHS OF ALL THINGS off ebay,  since only now have they rereleased it on disc (blu ray) and I didnt want to pay more than $20, but I can recommend it already for no more reason than it was reviewed in my friends newsletter (publisher of horror/sci fi/fantasy literature) and everyone there is awesome:

Nice mate nice - talking of Bluray this is a legendary one.

That window scene tripped me out when I was a kid. One of the most haunting films ever made, and it was a made for tv film. With that kid floating around tapping on the window. [Image: ats2500_new_shocked.gif] They made a Theatrical Version, that was ok. I think the Original miniseries stands out though.
hmm actually it was made for MAX. I would watch the Original First, then the Remake. I guess the Remake is worth a watch.

I had begun reading Lovecraft in the late 60s and found his work to be soul shattering. So when Re-Animator hit the big screen in about 85 I rushed to the movie house. Man, I was not ready....

Then of course there was the original ''Night of the Living Dead''.  In 68 I was working at a drive in theater. New movies began on Friday nights and I worked the shift. After my shift was over I hung out and watched the second showing of NLD all by myself. It only stayed for two nights and was replaced for being to scary.

The thing is though that later, maybe a year or so I can't recall, some friends wanted to go see this scary movie at a walk-in theater that was getting popular so I went with them. As the movie began it seemed familiar to me and I soon realized that that first showing at the drive in had scared me so badly that I had put it out of my mind completely.

Age and such. But also, maybe more important is how well is it presented, how well does the movie pretend to be a good story already when all of a sudden things begin to tell you you ain't in Kansas any more. A god series on HBO in 2020 was Lovecraft Country. It let you believe it was just going to be a racial movie about evil white people in the south being evil to some black people traveling though the area, until it wasn't. Great effects there and such that also relied upon stereotypical white and black phobias.

The Thing (1982) is pretty close in terms of aesthetics.

Also Altered States (1980) and Mimic (1997)
Well haven't finished watching it yet but the first 10 minutes of this film are absolutely bonkers.

When friends ask me for a horror film to watch I typically respond that there are basically 2 types of movies in this category, traditional horror films or films that make you feel horrible.  I then ask which category they want to see. For the films that make you feel horrible you have the following which is not a complete list at all.

Martyrs (screw the US remake), A Serbian Film, Life and Death of a Porno Gang, Antichrist, Irreversible, Inside, I Saw the Devil, August Underground series, Murder Set Pieces, Megan is Missing, Atroz, Melanchohlia Der Engle, Snuff 102, Oster Montag, anything stupid Lucifer Valentine has done, Bunny Game, Devils Weekend,  Her Name Is Torment series, quite a few others that I have forgotten and finally Trauma.

Some highlights, or lowlights, ...
Megan is Missing really only makes you feel horrible at the end.
August Underground and Lucifer Valentine films are inevitably hours lost you cant get back . I will say that some of Valentines stuff is thought provoking on some level..specifically, Black Metal Veins.
If you like Art House style horror then Melencholia Der Engle and Her Name Is Torment work.
Martyrs is a film that requires your attention no matter how brutal. A Serbian Film is actually well made even with some silly elements.

In my opinion the current winner, if thats such a thing, of this type of film is Trauma. It takes the nihilism of Martyrs and A Serbian Film to a whole different level. A brutal, violent, soul crushing film.

Traditional horror is easier to list. Lake Mungo, Sinister, Hereditary, The Wailing, The VVitch (Slow burn), Last Train to Buson, The Poughkeepsie Tapes (overrated imo), Malignant (3rd act is crazy), The Dark and The Wicked and many other reason films are worth the time to watch them.
Tetsuo: The Iron Man

If your into Japanese / Foreign horror films... especially the kind where you don't even understand the language.

Even just the trailer is enough to warp your mind.
