Theory: The cops found a weapon, didn't take pictures of the weapon in situ , then later did a re-enactment using a generic rifle in box, for photo, not the murder weapon.
Law enforcement will put evidence in paper bags or cardboard boxes to protect it. In this case, handling by too many people could have smeared fingerprints or added theirs' to it or accidentally added someone's DNA to the gun.
They Do Not move evidence till it is thoroughly documented.
