But China is in no way fascist. It is authoritarian, certainly, but it displays few of the hallmarks of fascism. As for Myanmar, it is a typical warlord-run failed state, the kind often described as a kakistocracy (the word also technically describes the United States under Trump).

The China comment was a comparison.   America may use a quasi-fascist playbook, but there's no gestapo beyond his supporters. There are not 3 million social media watchers of keywords like China.

Well, there were no Gestapo who weren't Hitler supporters. America isn’t a fascist state, but Trump and his administration are trying their best to change that, and so far they have met little real opposition.

That’s true. Freedom of speech is fetishized in the USA, so it will be the last right to be removed. But we may yet hope that things do not reach that pass.

I know that there are vast tracts of the United States where the honest citizens will rearrange your face – or worse – if you give them an inkling that your views on religion or politics differ too radically from theirs. Americans are phobic about government tyranny but don't seem to notice all the private exploitation and bullying that oppresses them. They work like slaves for their employers, have few labour rights, are ripped off by gluttonous capitalists every way they turn (effectively a different and onerous form of taxation levied by profiteers instead of bureaucrats) and now even have their public speech regulated for them by the likes of Zuckerberg and Musk.

Land of the Free, eh? I hear they used to call it the Home of the Brave, too.

Iran hits a tanker in the strait, enforcing there control over Hormuz.

A tanker reported being struck by a projectile in the Strait ​of Hormuz on Saturday, Britain's maritime security agency said, after the United States and Iran each launched strikes in the worst escalation since they signed an interim peace deal.
The warring sides ‌each accused the other of violating the agreement reached two weeks ago to end the four-month-old conflict. Washington said it hit Iranian targets overnight, while Iran said it had struck targets linked to U.S. forces on Saturday in response.

Iran has not directly commented on reports of specific attacks on ships. But ⁠Iranian state television reported that the Revolutionary Guards had fired "warning shots" towards unspecified vessels attempting to pass through channels not approved by Iran, and that this was now prompting other ships to seek Iranian permits before attempting ​to cross the strait.
