The UK war with Argentina is commonly called the Falklands War (or Falklands Conflict). In Argentina it is often referred to as the Guerra de las Malvinas (Malvinas War).
What the war was over
The conflict was a 10-week undeclared war in 1982 over the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas in Spanish), a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic, along with the nearby South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands.
• British position: The islands have been under continuous British control since 1833, and the roughly 1,800–2,000 inhabitants (who are overwhelmingly of British descent) overwhelmingly wish to remain a UK territory. This crisis just made more visible the long term planning of Greek diplomacy, coupled with the increasing operational capacity of the Greek armed forces. In contrast to others that chose ambiguity and coercion, Greece invested in being dependable to its multi-faceted alliances and commitments. By carefully and gradually expanding its military and diplomatic footprint the previous years, Greece transformed itself quietly into a multi-regional security provider (Balkans, EastMed, Middle East), simultaneously taking part in protecting NATO's south-eastern flank, the commercially crucial Red Sea waterway leading to Suez and critical to the world oil supply energy installations, among others. Of course the primary mission remains to protect Greek territory, interests and security as well as its brotherly Cyprus, from active threats that are unfortunately still present. Even though the overseas deployments are purely defensive and most predate the current crisis, their recent successful interception of ballistic missiles in KSA and drones in Cyprus and the Red Sea make them more high profile, increasing the risks. So the challenge is to remain vigilant militarily, while at the same time to diplomatically re-emphasize Greece's defensive minded posture.
