You have to look at it from a Russian point of view, that the disputed oblasts in the East, were shelled by Kiev and Russian was outlawed to be spoken, and local Russian speakers were beat up before any invasion by Russia began. They held referendums and voted to be part of Russia, after all the abuse.
This was essentially a civil war that in Russia's eyes, they were protecting ethnic Russians.
I am sure they see it like the Germans saw Strasbourg, they were liberating local German speakers who were being 'put down' by the French in the 40s. Same story in Silesia vs Poland and Bohemia vs Czechs. Is it correct? They probably think so.
So I am sure that in their eyes, Ukraine's actions gave away those territories long ago, so no need for territorial concession.
Just playing devils advocate.
With that theory of Russia believing it's civil war and saving it's Russian-speaking citizens, no wonder Putin is stating that he wants to "FREE" all the countries surrounding Iran. How many Russian-speaking people are in Poland, etc.?

He's copying the new guru of what is acceptable state level behavior towards anything not us.
Remember, in the new America the rule of thumb for the New GOP is "What Would Donald Do? WWDD! What does Trump make acceptable decorum for other state level politicians? How do I act like him? How do I please him most?
Vance was bought in to be a brainless extention of the autocrat king. He was chosen for being the opposite of Mike Pence integrity-wise. He needs outspoken flipflopping populists like himself.
That way, they have all the appearance of integrity and directness, without actually having to be or do either.
Let's not forget the video of a Senate staffer's butt play in the Capitol Building...cocaine found at the White House, Trans boob flash at a White House lawn event
Not even going to pile on Biiden and Harris' antics.
We lost the integrity of our government a long time ago probably before 2001 but certainly after it.
PS
There's a time and a place butt in Congress and the White House?

The Russian citizens in Poland are not complaining about being beaten up abused and shelled as the Ukrainian Russians were
We can argue it doesn't justify the invasion but there's solid evidence of them being more than just harassed.

He's willing to wade through muck for his people and peace and step down if necessary with concessions in place, that's the way I see it.

What concessions do you think he will get?
Im holding out hope they get some territory back but after Friday Russia is in a complete position of strength, they know that Trump was about to bail, and the EU isn't ready to step up to the plate with all of its members.
