The Debate Forum

I enjoy a good debate, and used to date a college debater, and yes, she used that to great effect. I don't recommend it

Still, she never developed an effective counter for...

But that relationship might be why I take debates less seriously, one too many debates were initiated in the milk aisle of the grocery store

or do you want to 'debate' that first?

And please... accompany suggestions with your desire to participate... even if only as a viewer.

There is such a thing as debating without competition, but cooperation... for the sake of an end product...
(like a thread... or think... an article.)  It used to happen all the time in news rooms back in the 1940's and 50's.... but no more.... ever.

I watch debates among many different people who think they are great debaters but it always devolves because it is always competitive and when one debater bests another debater then believe it or not, no matter the intellect or age, the insults start to fly.

I'd really enjoy seeing a cooperative debate.

Jane, always got the insult in first, like calling him a miserable failure.

Jane, did not reply to his following insult because she took the high road and the message is clear 'don't argue with a fool (or in this case a miserable failure) because it's impossible to win. ha ha

Jane: "That's the news, good night."

The trick is to escape the 's' by substituting %73, so the link doesn't break. It's a forum bug, arguably. I had to dance around it on my thread a couple of weeks ago:

Meanwhile, in America...

I used to think I wanted to learn to be a better debater.... but then I realized that most people don't agree on what a debate is... what the point of it is...

Some... no, many... think the 'show' is a debate....

The response under pressure - timed - shit-show the media presents as debate.

Debate isn't a performance "for" an audience.

Conduct it that way, and you get what we have now...

Most people think memes and hyperbole and mud-slinging have a place in debate...
they really don't.... unless they themselves are the subject. People honestly think, when
they listen to a political debate... that what they are experiencing is debate.

A very "not cool" way to destroy the purpose of debate.

I think it's because debate often are ultimately persuasive... that it is fully abused by the
marketeering and 'faux' activism (read partisan-aficionado) crowd... it can be a great show.

However their shows are not really debates... they are staged, and produced... and carried out under a directorial control necessary for production.

I think it's pretty clear that most everyone heard here, does debate.

DI likes to provide a 'space' free from interruption, to pursue such things as the ongoing IdeomotorPrisoner vs. DBCowboy... which interestingly arose, not from some produced enterprise

... but from a common observation.... people call each others ideas or concepts Fascist or Commie with great ease... perhaps too easily... especially when it's against your own choices.

Hence:  "Yes, it's fair to call the second Trump Administration fascist."

as a proposition....

This is where the tires hit the pavement...
for those confident enough in their reasoning to defend or attack the assertion directly.

Ta da!  These two fighters are attempting a "REAL" debate...  I applaud them.

"@IdeomotorPrisoner stumbles out the gate, handing the mic to @DBCowboy then requesting her entire opening statement be removed. The moderator complies. Subsequent posts are deemed out-of-order and ignored by the judges."

Ouch.

(Edit to note: I'm just kidding because I thought it would be funny to make IP fret)

The old ATS debates WAY back in the day were actually very good. My god I think those were 20 years ago Spin

Yeah... I'm also ADD, if that's not apparent. the impetutousness to post comes before the compulsiveness to edit takes over.

But the first post had some word salad driving me insane.

And in redoing it, I removed the quoted text. Which was important to compare to my opinion how Trump qualifies.

So that fail is on me. And largely my inability to function without edit features.

Its also impossible to keep hyperbole out of this. As the comparison is one of hyperbole and superficial likeness.

I could redo it a third time, and I swear ill get it looking right.

Or better yet... You can axe the debate thread and I will take the same argument/post and put it in the mudpit to open it up to everyone?

The re-redo is already formatted and saved in notes, which is something I should probably start using more for my posts.

This would suggest you are against my meme-heavy, mud-slinging debating... maybe in a formal academic debate, but otherwise one uses every tool available to knock the opponent off thier game...

Like posting an opening statement twice....

If it's allowed, that person has an automatic advantage as thier point is presented twice, a de facto affirmation, and without removal, it's an affirmation from the debate moderator that the statement has validity.
