In the few interviews I've seen with the two of them, Nick complained that he and his father never bonded when he was young and when Rob did pay him attention that they never had anything in common. It also appeared that Michelle would be the intervener/negotiator between them, but who really knows what really went on between the three of them. One thing for sure is that Rob and Michelle tried everything but they may have been mistaken thinking that Nick was on a level plateau of dysfunction or misjudging how really sick he was.
Maybe men that haven't been nurtured or loved just don't know what to do? I see some men of younger generations being more present and loving, well within my family any way. Maybe with Rob Reiner, he was more focused on the 'provider' role rather than the 'nurturer father' role, but his other children speak very highly of him being loving, so I don't know. Maybe each child requires a different approach to bonding, affection and love (?)
I think that children growing up in "Hollywood families" likely have a vastly different experience than most of us. The pressures must be immense. Imagine the child of famous actors in basic public school. Probably doesn't happen much, but then a collection of similar children probably don't interact in the same way as regular kids, nor get exposed to much of the violence and social distortion of public schools. Public schools in my day were rough, but we learned and we grew, and it trained us in -- if nothing else -- conflict resolution. That became a beneficial skill in adulthood.
This isn't the first famous family by any means in which the children struggled for normality. As Annie pointed out earlier, Nick may be borderline on the autism scale, which, while not fatal, is yet another difficulty. I'm not defending Nick. I'm saying I can understand how things progress. There were two kids where I grew up who became what I can only characterize as monsters. Did they have the same influences as me? No. They existed within the same demographics and socializations as me, but their familial and other variables were different. Plus, there is choice. Some individuals prefer to remain apart/alone with few friends; others choose to form a tribe and their experiences, while in the same geographical area, are vastly different.
I can't imagine what it is like to grow up in a famous family. I think the pressure to perform must be immense. I will be very pissed if Nick skates. He did a terrible thing (if convicted). Life has consequences.

Father and Son locking lips ain't right...even in Hollywood.
If I may, "locking lips" implies more than just a peck. My father is 91. We see each other about every ten years. When he first sees me, he kisses me quickly and hugs me hard such that I can't breathe. Father/son groups that hold a kiss -- which is what you were implying -- seems a tad strange to me also. However, judgement doesn't belong to me. YMMV.

It was one actor who most likely was homophobic or something else, seeing something that wasn't there.

This comment to the post sheds some light on it:
"Michael kissed Fredo on the lips and it is very common in European homes. You homophobes need ass cancer the same people who we were outraged at people making jokes at Charlie Kirk’s expense are now doing the same to Robert Reiner who is a far more significant person in American culture than Charlie Kirk ever will or could be"

You all need to watch some shows about other cultures.
America is stupidly uptight.

Even in different threads, you keep proving me right.
This is awesome.

What is that called? Projection? Interpretation?
Making something what you want it to be -- and ignoring by choice what it actually says?
