Charlie pissed off a lot of people with his rhetoric which spans all political, social, religious and cultural spectrums.

Can you find one righty who celebrated his murder?

To be fair, I don't think the climate is much different now than it was then.

Many people feel like the temperature is different, or the world is more extreme. And I can appreciate things are different just because the world is, but I also think instant news and social media has made us more aware of the state of humanity.

There has always been tragedy, chaos and horror. There has even been ideological and social division, enough to make powder kegs of political violence.

I know I'm younger here, but I'm old enough to know that a political movement was born out of distrust of federal power. 

Two incidents where it would be easy to villainize the victims, but conviction on rights acknowledges wrong doing. Ruby Ridge and Waco created a movement against the federal government, and part of that with good reason. That tension however lead to Oklahoma City. The argument on which side has to own all of that is moot to me. I only bring it up because I think it's important people realize we aren't suddenly cast in a period with unique tension. 

The left had their instances with the LA riots, weather people, and George Floyd.

I don't think it's a contest. I don't think we're in some unique timeline with problems no other generation had to grapple with. The country and world are always nuanced, and equally as hard to navigate for every generation. If anything, I feel for today because of the blatant shallowness we celebrate.

To be fair, both perspectives can exist in a country of 350 million people, don't you think?

It's OK if we both have divergent thoughts and histories. Im 60, different life experiences, politics was always in the news, BUT for my family and friends on my particular timeline, it wasn't a priority... we had family, faith, and finances, and those keep us busy full time

IF and when something big happened, we rolled with the punches and carried on. It didn't dominate our day or discussions. Challenger was a big deal, Simpson and King, I can't even remember where I watched the Bronco chase, but heard the verdict in the elevator, leaving work, and we went to dinner as planned 

I remember the Fall of the Berlin Wall was the most significant thing politically till 9/11, but ive been working since 85 and we went full bore with basically 2 weeks at most during the summer and 2 weeks for holidays.

I was on the road out of town on 9/11, drove home for 6 hours, and had to go back out of town the next day
and for the rest of the week. 

FWIW, everybody in my family and professional circle was the same way.

And I know it was a better approach, for the average Joe, being plugged in politically just zaps energy that would be better used in other facets of your life

As for now, sure, CS every generation has its events, but it's how we respond to those events. I know my grandparents were indeed the greatest generation, and my parents had it relatively easy, and they still have superior coping skills to 80% of their contemporaries, because they had spent enough time interacting with the real world, they can handle anything at incredibly young ages...DOING THINGS ROUTINELY that later generations would pass out or throw up if they had to do the same

Not sure if this has been mentioned but from the reporting I read this:

...messages between Tyler Robinson and his roommate revealed information about the alleged plot including details about a rifle, matching the description of the weapon recovered after the shooting.

In my view that makes the room mate an accomplice.  He did not go to the police, knowing that there was a murder plot. He needs to also be arrested and this needs to expand out from there.
I am also suspicious of the father.
Him turning in his son may simply be a deflection, a planned way of shielding others including himself - agreed with the shooter.  Which would be why the shooter is staying silent​.
