Along the lines of what you said, I have heard it speculated, that an initiate would lay in the box as a part of initiation into the mysteries.
Considering the main function of it was a power plant, I think it had something more to do with that. Also speculation, that there were many 'Arcs of the Covenant'. It just so happens that box in the kings chamber perfectly fits the arc, based one dimensions given in ancient texts. Considering that was also an energy device, it would make sense that it helped power the pyramid.
a) not an initiation chamber. I've been down there. There's not a lot of room and no real way to drag someone down that tunnel and into the main chamber without handing them a lamp (and ruining the whole scenario.) It's cramped (can't stand upright in many areas... including the tunnel down), it's a LONG climb down and back up (and very hard to carry anything while you're going in or out).
b) not a power plant. If something broke, you would have to climb down a long narrow shaft in the pitch dark and if your light goes out you might never find your way out (and you might fall into a pit.) Power plant parts have to be accessible (and quickly accessible) to repair any problems or upgrade stuff.
You have to have good lighting if you're going to fix something.
Also, to be able to have a power plant, you need miles and miles of copper wire of a consistent quality. No Egyptian copper objects found have a consistent formula (percentage of copper mixed with an exact percentage of other metals... or absolutely pure copper.)
