Okay, I actually read everything in the twitter feed now.

The alien wasn't in the egg, the alien was in some kind of cryo pod. The egg is just a thing at this stage made from an unknown material that is metal that is impenetrable. I wrongly assumed when they mentioned "pod" this was the egg 

It was in an alien base in a cave. I'm not sure if the alien or the egg was discovered first.

Feels like someone saw the NewsNation egg and said I can LARP better than that..
