We did similar, but not exactly the same.
I'd put it to you that we dealt with our natives on a superior level to you Iberians. We knew when it was time to leave India. The natives had served us very admirably in the war against the Japanese and we rewarded them in turn with independence. A similar situation with our African colonies. Compare this with the way you so reluctantly gave up your possessions, indeed you fought a total war with the independent movements right into the modern era, only giving in when your own nation revolted. Quite different really. Admirable in your persistence against the tide of the time. Quite bad for your Portuguese colonial population who had lived in the colonies for hundreds of years and had to flee with their lives. Mozambique, Angola could have been so different. Our move into self rule was far better managed. Many 'new' nations wanted to keep the ties with us in the British Commonwealth that survives and flourishes to this day, quite unique compared with other colonial nations. If you'd have followed our example you woudn't find many of your colonials living out their final chance of the colonial dream in one of our ex possessions RSA where your people are to be found all over. You never find British colonials who fled for their lives in Mozambique, etc, while you find masses of your people in our former colonial possessions. If one wants to study de-colonisation one can't find a better example than the British Empire. Our ex colonies are often flourishing today, our people often still live there too. Compare that to the mess Portugal left behind.
