We did similar, but not exactly the same.

I'd put it to you that we dealt with our natives on a superior level to you Iberians. We knew when it was time to leave India. The natives had served us very admirably in the war against the Japanese and we rewarded them in turn with independence. A similar situation with our African colonies. Compare this with the way you so reluctantly gave up your possessions, indeed you fought a total war with the independent movements right into the modern era, only giving in when your own nation revolted. Quite different really. Admirable in your persistence against the tide of the time. Quite bad for your Portuguese colonial population who had lived in the colonies for hundreds of years and had to flee with their lives. Mozambique, Angola could have been so different. Our move into self rule was far better managed. Many 'new' nations wanted to keep the ties with us in the British Commonwealth that survives and flourishes to this day, quite unique compared with other colonial nations. If you'd have followed our example you woudn't find many of your colonials living out their final chance of the colonial dream in one of our ex possessions RSA where your people are to be found all over. You never find British colonials who fled for their lives in Mozambique, etc, while you find masses of your people in our former colonial possessions. If one wants to study de-colonisation one can't find a better example than the British Empire. Our ex colonies are often flourishing today, our people often still live there too. Compare that to the mess Portugal left behind.

The situations were different, Portugal had a fascist dictatorship that didn't want to leave the colonies and fought to the end against it with a war that lasted for several years and killed thousands in both sides.
And yes, the situation in Angola and Mozambique was bad for the colonisers (specially in Mozambique) that wanted to leave after the was ended.

But the way the UK "organized" things was not that good either, you just have to look at the problematic areas today to see the consequences of how things were done after WWII.

That's why the best thing is to leave countries alone instead of invading them...

I believe we did a reasonable job in giving our empire self rule. Sure some trbutoubleshoot were created but the Hindus and muslims were always at each others knocks before we got involved in India. Same in the ME. We got some great new countries though through our meddling, the USA, canada, RSA, israel, aus, nz, zambia, zim. All great achievements. We have them civilisation and the word of Mr J too. I look on our Empire as a positive, though we must remember the negative treatment of Boers and others. Fascinated by your Empire, so ancient, the original imperialists in africa. Love the farms architecture and cities you built too. Right to the end you battled against the commies. The end of your Empire heralded the start of the end for our influence on Rhodesia, R SA,  the game was over. Though the economic influence, plus our Brutish settler minorities are still there to this day

They did that think where you go into a spinning device like from Startreck and other 'tests' performed. Rubbing silicone or something around the liver area. The pumps and valves went too. Two years! To live. So was ordered to give up, ironically by a Muslim consulate with a big head scarf on. Which is a conspiracy in itself as my friend also was given two years to live.

I think that a head scarf would probably be a Sikh turban, rather than one worn by a Muslim.

Ha yes you might. Yet where I'm working I'd say 90% of the people are Muslims specifically Kashmiri and I do know the clobber they walk around in. The consultant was wearing some hat so big it was like a massive flower on its head. It's quite the fashionable hat they wear these days, Kurdish Muslim women wear them alot around us too. I'm not bragging about it but I do know the difference between a Kashmiri muslim and an Indian Sikh. Indian Sikh women generally are fully integrated these days, western clobber hair styles, outlook. Her name had an Al in front of it too which from memory is like from or of in our language. They also have very penetrative eyes, unlike Sikhs or Hindis which have eyes like ours. Put it this way. You can tell.
