We also didn't levy tariffs on Belarus, Russia, North Korea and Cuba. But put tariffs on 2 uninhabited islands which doesn't make a lot of sense. I am glad to see some industries immediately seeing an uptick in business due to the tariffs? (putnam6 not sure what industry you work in) but my industry just took a big hit. Aluminum just jumped by 56% due to not only unilateral tariffs on aluminum (BTW i don't think Trump can legally levy unilateral tariffs without congress, but that doesn't seem to be a problem) but blanket tariffs on certain countries that mine a specific item to make aluminum with (bauxite) which will be added on top. Grain just skyrocketed (90% of grain is grown and harvested outside the united states for breweries) and the US can't grow more. We are limited in producing aluminum cans by the lack of material (although some bauxite is mined in the US, we are pretty much mining it at capacity). I am all for more industries producing in the US, but it will take years and hundreds of billions of dollars before some of these factories can build. Plus, what incentive do they have? Trump leaves in 4 years and Democrats win, reverse all the tariffs and now the large companies who spent billions of dollars building new factories will instantly be priced out by new companies importing everything again and driving the cost down. These tariffs are not tax breaks for us, learned that in High School, but could be a boon for the 1%ers who's tax rates are going to drop. In addition to all of that....what prevents anyone in this current administration from taking advantage of the unilateral tariffs? Industry A could in theory pay to have the tariffs lifted on just them, or offer relief in return for exclusive contracts that exclude anyone else but those who can afford it.
