(08-23-2025, 10:32 PM)TheWay Wrote: Matthew, Luke and John say the women left the tomb and shared their news (Matthew 28:1-10; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-2); Mark seems to be saying that they left and told no one because they were afraid (Mark 16:1-8). How can these accounts be reconciled?
Here are some possible explanations:- That Mark is referring specifically to the women speaking of the angel's words, not of speaking of the fact that the tomb was empty.
- That Mark is referring to the women not speaking to those men who were there at the tomb: i.e. the soldiers who were supposed to have been on guard.
E.g., Matthew records that the women experienced both (initial) fear and (then) great joy, whereas Mark only takes note of their initial fear.
As a further observation, it is perhaps worth noting that the Greek underlying "they said nothing to anyone" (Mark 16:8) has "said" in the aorist aspect (οὐδενὶ οὐδὲν εἶπον), which in Koine Greek typically conbeys simple past action and does not qualify the duration, completion, or repetition of the action. We might translate the second portion of Mark 16:8 as "Neither did they say anything to anyone [at that moment]". This is consistent with the other accounts which also do not record the women speaking in the tomb, only afterwards.

The point here, in regards to changes in translation, is that the Ethiopian Bible's translation is the earliest, if you want to go there.

"The Garima Gospels are the oldest translation of the Bible in Geʽez and the world's earliest complete illustrated Christian manuscript.[sup] [6][/sup] Monastic tradition holds that they were composed close to the year 500,[sup] [7][/sup] a date supported by recent radiocarbon analysis; samples from Garima 2 proposed a date of c. 390–570, while counterpart dating of samples from Garima 1 proposed a date of c. 530–660.[sup] [8][/sup] The Garima Gospels is also thought to be the oldest surviving Geʽez manuscript.[sup] [9][/sup][sup] [10][/sup]
The milestones of the modern editions were the Roman edition of the New Testament in 1548 edited by Tasfa Seyon, which is the editio princeps,[sup] [11][/sup] and the critical edition of the New Testament by Thomas P. Platt in 1830 (his edition of the Geʽez four Gospels was first published in 1826[sup] [11][/sup]).[sup] [12]" (Wikipedia)[/sup]

"The work as a whole has been lost in the original Greek, but it may be reconstructed from later chronographists of the Byzantine school who made excerpts from the work, especially George Syncellus. The tables of the second part have been completely preserved in a Latin translation by Jerome, and both parts are still extant in an Armenian translation. The loss of the Greek originals has given the Armenian translation a special importance; thus, the first part of Eusebius's Chronicle, of which only a few fragments exist in Greek, has been preserved entirely in Armenian, though with lacunae. The Chronicle as preserved extends to the year 325.[sup] [43]"

Indeed, and here is more history on why they chose the sunburst design.
"Before the Council of Trent, the most common design was the tower.[sup] [5][/sup] The sun design would come to dominate the shape of modern monstrances after it became clear that the ostensorium could be better adapted to the object of drawing all eyes to the Sacred Host itself by making the transparent portion of the vessel just of the size required, and surrounded, like the sun, with rays. Monstrances of this shape, dating from the fifteenth century, are also not uncommon, and for several hundred years past this has been by far the commonest form in practical use."

Believe me, after being indoctrinated into that religious dogma as a child and being submerged into it thereafter, they absolutely reject any type of metaphysics, paranormal, occultism and/or paganism. In my experience, they make great efforts to do so. Which is, to me, another contradiction in that religion, such as them performing exorcisms (paranormal) or is it just a psychological tactic in evoking one's faith to defeat their mental disorder(?), the promise of the soul entering God's kingdom after death, Jesus' resurrection as spirit or flesh debate, etc. etc. etc.
ETA:
Just wondering if maybe they should change the montance to this:
"The only journey is the one within."

Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? You will again see yet greater abominations than these.” He brought me into the inner court of the LORD’s house; and I saw at the door of the LORD’s temple, between the porch and the altar, there were about twenty-five men with their backs towards the LORD’s temple and their faces towards the east. They were worshipping the sun towards the east. Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? For they have filled the land with violence, and have turned again to provoke me to anger. Behold, they put the branch to their nose. Therefore I will also deal in wrath. My eye won’t spare, neither will I have pity. Though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, yet I will not hear them.” (Ezekiel 8:15-18 WEBPB)
Be very careful, for you saw no kind of form on the day that the LORD spoke to you in Horeb out of the middle of the fire, lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourself a carved image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky, the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth; and lest you lift up your eyes to the sky, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the army of the sky, you are drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole sky. (Deuteronomy 4:15-19 WEBPB)

The great dragon was thrown down, the old serpent, he who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. (Revelation 12:9)
"Hill of the oracle" not "divining serpent."
What does AI say?
Quote:• The name "Vatican" originates from the Vatican Hill (Mons Vaticanus), a name that pre-dates the establishment of the Catholic Church's headquarters there.
• The word itself likely comes from an ancient Etruscan word related to prophecy or oracles, meaning "hill of the oracle" or "Oracle Mount".
• This ancient connection to spiritual messages or soothsaying may have contributed to the choice of this location by the early church.
Quote:• From an Etruscan settlement: Many modern etymologists believe the name is a loanword from an older Etruscan language, possibly from a settlement in the area called Vatica.
But hey, nobody can translate Latin right.
My translator says "vates" and "vatis" means "you guys".
But I already know from encountering this before that "vates" does also mean prophecy, seer, oracle, or soothsayer. Which can be "diviner" as well. It's hard to use a translator though. While "vates" refers to a person, the word "oraculum" is more specific to oracle phenomena itself, and is the word preferred by the translator.
The first part is valid(ish).
But if anything, "can" means dog, not serpent. And has never been serpent. Canem, canes, canis ≠ snake. Snake words = serpens, serpentis, serpentine.
The latin root hasn't changed much to modern day usage. In Spanish it is serpiente. The Diamondbacks have a "Los Serpientes" city connect jersey and everything.
So if you want to take western liberties it can mean "divining dog" before it means "divining serpent."
Vates Canis! The Oracle Dog.

They worship the sun without a doubt. But those who are blind and deaf, just like the idols they worship, cannot or refuse to see it.
Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they don’t speak. They have eyes, but they don’t see. They have ears, but they don’t hear. They have noses, but they don’t smell. They have hands, but they don’t feel. They have feet, but they don’t walk, neither do they speak through their throat. Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them. (Psalms 115:4-8)
