There is a test question given to children to determine their moral comprehension. It goes like this:

The child is told that an old man's wife is very sick and she will die, very soon, if she doesn't urgently get medicine. And the medicine is very effective and a few doses always cure the sickness.

So, the old man goes to the dispensary to buy the medicine, but he can't afford it and the person behind the counter will not give him the medicine without full payment.

Now, his wife will die soon if she doesn't get the medicine. So the old man waits for the dispensary to close and, under the cover of darkness, breaks in and steals the medicine for his wife.

The question is then put to the child, asking if what the old man did was bad, or good?

Very young children will all say that the old man was bad, because he stole something. This is because they have not reached a stage in comprehension that allows them to reason ethically.

However, most normal children reach a stage of ethical cognition, and realize the value of human life is supreme over everything else in the world - they realize the old man did something against the rules, but doing what he did doesn't make him a bad person.

And sometimes 'the rules' can be what is bad.

The inability to innately understand such moral issues in more mature humans is a symptom of psychopathy.
