A test would also have a very distinct signature that would be obvious to anyone that knows what to look for. Iran probably does not have to test their enriched nuclear material, Russia probably gave them all the info to make it without needing to do any testing. They probably even sold them some of the equipment to enrich it, and the rest probably was bought from China, China does buy a lot of oil products from Iran I read. If they have experts there enriching it, and have equiptment to measure it's enrichment and the technological expertise to build the bombs, why would they need to do nuclear testing. Once we developed the technology, little testing is done anymore. North Korea probably did not have as much experienced outside tutoring so they had to do some testing...

Normally I would argue that it would be nearly impossible to develop something as complex as a nuclear warhead and expecting it to work in a battlefield situation without having first conducting a series of test firings.
However, times are strange, and I admit that I am beginning to doubt my preconceptions. If allegations are to be believed, Iran has a more than sufficient stockpile of enriched uranium to begin, and perhaps , complete working nuclear weapons. That still leaves Iran to come up with a workable design. However, with friends like Russia and China, both seasoned nuclear powers, it is conceivable that a "proven" warhead design might have been made available. Might call that "cheating" on Iran's part, but "all's fair in love, war, and petro-politics". One thing I found very concerning from the most recent headlines is that Iran has apparently been able to hit the Israeli port of Haifa with a ballistic missile. If Israel can no longer reliably protect its primary port, as well as Tel Aviv, and it's primary nuclear research center at Dimona from conventional missiles, imagine the outcome if just those three locations were hit by even crude nuclear warheads launched from Iran. To be sure, that nightmare scenario is running through the minds of the IDF and the Israeli government. |
