So my point is that even if the people there became independent I think it highly unlikely they would want any changes that other countries or billionaires want to impose on it, unless there is an actual security threat to their way of life, which there is not at the moment.
All this talk about independence and self determination for 57,000 people who inhabit a tiny portion a a huge chunk of the planet makes no sense to me. And why should they get a seat at the table with the great nations of the world representing billions of people? I am not saying ignore them and their history completely, maybe carve out a small chunk they can reasonably govern, with special rights of access to the rest, but if they are to survive as a people, it will be as a vassal for another who can protect them.

They clearly value their own culture and autonomy.
And without a genuine security threat.
There's little reason to adopt other people's silly fears or agendas.
They wish to be left alone...

The people haven’t even voted yet. LoL
They're too scared to. They've been threatened with high treason and life in prison by those in Denmark if they do.¹
This is also why their "polls" are suspect.

It appears they already have protection from Denmark and NATO countries.

Let's be reasonable. Europe cannot protect a piece of North America.

Why can't NATO countries plus any other countries that may join in to assist not be able to handle rag-tag Russian forces (or what's left of them) and China which is iffy because they appear to be interested in only profit and as more and more countries are turning away from trade with US and turning to China, they will soon be #1 richest country, so why would they invade Greenland when they get all the rare earth minerals they want from African nations?

There wasn't any talk about it until Trump decided he wanted to steal their wealth

Greenland is not a piece of North America.
It is Greenland.

"...their wealth"
That's where we disagree. 57,000 people laying claim to 2.2 million sq km and all its natural resources?

It appears a billionaire, Ronald Lauder (Estee Lauder, behind Ukraine/US minerals deal) is pushing Trump on this acquisition for his and Trump's interests and to expand the Arctic.
"Like many of those around the president, Lauder’s policy suggestions appear to intersect with his business interests. As Trump has ratcheted up his threats to seize Greenland, Lauder has acquired commercial holdings there. Lauder is also part of the consortium whose desire to access Ukrainian minerals appears to have spurred Trump to demand a share of the war-torn country’s resources."
"That same year, Lauder said he was assisting Trump with “some of the most complex diplomatic challenges imaginable”. This seems to have included sowing the idea of Arctic expansion. The following year, the Wall Street Journal revealed Trump’s interest in Greenland. Denmark’s rulers expressed outrage. Trump responded by tweeting an image of a golden Trump Tower looming over a village, beside the caption: “I promise not to do this to Greenland!”"

Look at all the other billionaires wanting to jump on that gravy train.
"Just months after President Donald Trump first expressed interest in the United States possibly gaining control over Greenland, some of the richest people in the world—including Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg—began making strategic investments in the mineral-rich island."
