How are you going to do digital ID cards?
With smart phones?
Not everyone has those or can afford them.
I don't have one.
My husband has one but he gets confused on it.
(he has Parkinsons and cognitive issues).
What are you going to do with people like us?
Leave them behind?
It's your country ... you can do as you wish ...
But I hope the USA doesn't go to this.

Exactly.
I can't see it actually happening.

Politicians and government job-holders are by nature lazy and exploitative. The digital id makes it easier to track and control people, to steal from the fruits of their labor. Simple government economics, really.

yep who benefits? That’s the real question, as for the pros and cons you linked, sounds like a load of AI generated twaddle.
personally I think its necessary for the CBDC’s that are coming, especially when they are implemented into the UBI umbrella of benefits. I think the digital currency will be linked directly to these digital ID’s, probably your “credits” as well as other credentials will be stored on them directly. Think of the various cards that supermarkets implement for savings/deals on steroids.
The immigrants thing is just a cover a nice excuse in a time when many people are riled up about the issue and want something done about illegal immigration.
Let’s not forget CBDC’s are programmable, so you can only spend on your allotted amounts for energy costs, groceries, all the essentials basically. If you have anything left over at the end of the month it will reset back to zero. I expect there will be some portion of credits for inessentials and conveniently the government and associated private partnerships will know exactly what you spend on everything including personal stuff. Nice and handy.
I think that’s the real reason for the recent push, the only non nefarious reason I can think of is streamlining all the other forms of ID into one thing, making things more efficient overall. But the governments never been much good at efficiency.

There will be a card version like a driving license, that’s how it was going to be originally. I’m sure there will be options. Judging by the ball ache of using government websites I’m fairly sure they don’t care about anyone’s inconvenience or lack of IT skills.

Do you guys not have drivers licenses in the UK, and if you do, what is the difference between these IDs and that one? The U.S. also has other IDs issued by state called State IDs because we have no imagination with naming things. Passports that let you *gasp* pass ports Lets see what else we got some have medical IDs for medical craziness, some have military IDs, some have federal IDs. Thats about it.

Yes we do. We don't need one to work though.

Well all I can suggest is to research the Estonian people's experiences to get real life experiences with this digital ID thing.

Most employees here get a copy of our drivers license at the very least and those that work for their state or federal government get their IDs made during hiring. I would say identification is a requirement of work in the U.S. unless its a job where someone is going to take advantage of you and would want no record of your existence
Just remembered Student IDs are a thing at all educational institutes. All IDs are all digital but backed by paper as well because everything in government is backed by paper in case of electronic collapse there are hard copies

In the UK, if you got your driving licence before 1998, it was a 'paper' version without any photo on and when the photo version was introduced you didn't have to change it. All drivers who pasted after that date had to have a 'plastic' version with a photo on. The sorts of other I.D. you've listed have gone over to similar 'photo I.D.'
