Digital ID cards again in the UK
#1
In the news recently the government are going to introduce digital ID cards again, their reason this time is to combat illegal immigration. previously they tried to introduce them back in the 90’s under the Blair government, but because of massive public backlash the scheme was scrapped.

So I’m reaching out to this community asking why? What’s the big obsession with these?
I mean these days it’s a different world to the 90’s we already have “smart” phones with their biometrics and the rest, digital passports and driving licences. NI numbers to work legally. So what’s the big deal and push for digital ID cards? Obviously they aren’t going to combat illegal immigration as the illegals work, well illegally, that’s if they aren’t already in the system being “processed” while living in hotels and such indefinitely.

I don’t get it, why are they so obsessed with this scheme? Who benefits really?

Oh and the head of the company who will be rolling these out is non other than Tony Blair’s son. Hmm.

So come on deny my ignorance on this matter, what’s the real deal going on here.

Good queston. "Who benefits?"

Here are the pros and cons from the Estonian Digital ID card, which your country wants to mimic.

"Pros and Cons of Estonia's Digital ID SystemEstonia's digital ID system has both advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the key points to consider:Pros: Cons: ----

As for which company your government will hire to implement this system, I'd follow that rabbit hole to see who or which entity will benefit.

Deny your indolance? You never heard of Ransomware, extortion, bank fraud, drug cartels, child trafficking. Thats whats going on here.

So can you provide a link a support as to what started your thread connecting Digital ID cards to immigrants as they are also part of the problem.

Just yesterday two apparent immigrants were at my next door neighbors house. One could not speak English. I spoke to him using hand signals. They sat around for over 4 hours doing nothing. The no Englishspeaking one motioned they were watching for the guy on the other side of my home. So they were working as "Spotters" while he, the other neighbor moves his off white pancake consistancy blend for sale. Aka Fentanyl.

It's not a good thing.  You will need a smart phone which not everyone has.

And...Blair.

Wow.... fits the pattern of political leadership.

"Manufacture a problem for every one,
Apply your (ahem) "solution"...
Assume the position of the presumptive hero...
Enjoy.
Repeat."

The thrill of being a citizen now presumed to be swimming in illicit soup... they get to be "watched..." and told they are 'safer.'

It's supposedly meant to help fight illegal immigrants, they're saying that anyone coming to the UK will a need digital I.D. to work after a certain date.

Thanks for mentioning that a smart phone is needed, just going by the opening post I thought it was a real, physical card, not some "app".

Back in the 90’s it would have been a physical card, don’t know if it will just be an app along the lines of the “track a trace” during covid that was a total failure. fairly certain though it will be compulsory otherwise it’s pointless.

I mentioned that in the OP “for combating illegal immigrants” however if everyone is required to have it and it doesn’t prevent illegal work, I think that’s just an excuse to roll them out, remember they tried this in the 90’s when all that wasn’t even an issue. So I’m trying to understand the real reason.
