The problem that I can see are the numbers plain and simple with all immigrants, our infrastructure was not ready for mass migration from any other country.

Same thing as when the Fair Housing Act was past in the USA in 1968.  Americans -- not foreigners.

It became a cultural clash.

IMO it had the most effect of any movement on "European White" neighborhoods.

I respect that others can worship or not, I show respect for people and manage just fine.

Having lived in so many places I have seen a lot of everything you can imagine.  I have noticed the Muslims stay to themselves mostly, I forgot I did have one Muslim guy run up to my sons ex g/f and start screaming in her face, to which I jumped of the car and ran towards him asking is there a problem.  I can have a commanding presence when I need to.  He ran off!

Now, if anyone ever tried to dictate to me who I could believe in or what rules I should follow other than my own country I would not be the one!

If I were to move to another country and they accepted me in I would assimilate as best I could and be grateful.

Not really sure how bad things are in the UK regarding immigration but I suspect they probably have more problems because people cannot own guns!  In my town cops show up pretty quickly if you need them thank goodness!

You think people should change their culture?

To accommodate someone else's culture?

No, but Don’t Tread on Me comes to mind!

I do have Muslim friends who know I’m Catholic, we respect each other.  I’m lucky I guess.

I just can’t imagine moving somewhere and not respecting the people and cultures, you can do that and still not lose your own.   Apparently it’s becoming an issue in some places, I’ve not experienced that yet!

I experienced the Fair Housing Act -- before and after.  In real time.

I witnessed my all white Christian neighborhood change.

For better or worse, I’m really curious!   In what specific ways?

It's interesting that it works both ways.

Different ethnic/cultural groups used to develop neighborhoods.  Like Irish neighborhoods, Italian neighborhoods, etc.  After the Fair Housing Act -- they could not exclusively only sale/rent to their own kind.  Not sure I'd say that's good or bad.  But people had to intermingle and disperse (did not happen over night).

Recently (few years back) -- a housing development wanted to have only Christians.  They had to go to court.  They were eventually allowed -- but with restrictions on how many units.

I'm from the Los Angeles area.  We had Mexican/Asians/Blacks/Jewish/Whites/etc.  Each group congregated in specific areas.  Realtors could refuse to sell a home in an area if the person didn't fit the culture/race/nationality.  You were forced to stay with your own kind.

A specific instance I remember as a child.  A realtor was going around my neighborhood asking people if they wanted to sell their house.  Then they arranged for a white couple to view the home -- but the actual buyer was a black couple.  They were working through an organization for blacks to buy a home in a place of their choice.

Should people be confined to their own ethic/race/culture area?

For me I felt left out not experiencing people different than me.

ANNEE you live/d in LA and experienced that?  Seems like segregation to me!  That was housing too?

I once lived in a predominantly Mormon neighborhood, we had Mormons, some Catholic Mexicans, a lot of New York transplants, AZ Natives, CA transplants.

I thought it was pretty cool and I learned a lot about each culture and religion.   There is good and bad everywhere, acceptance and respect is key!  Avoidance of trouble as well!

That’s messed up!

Yeah - well I'm old  Tongue

I was a senior in high school when the Civil Rights Act was signed.  That was 4 years before the Fair Housing Act.

So - I've actually lived through many social changes.

People are good -- or people are bad.  The rest should not matter.

I lived in Koreatown near Western Ave.. It was like 20% Korean. It was affordable once.  And apart from stores with Korean signs i couldnt understand, not as Korean as you'd think.

But other neighborhoods weren't hubs of affordable mid-rise structures.

Westlake (neighborhood, not village) is 75% Latino.
Thai Town is 90% Thai.
Little Armenia is 80%
Chinatown is 65%
Little Tokyo is about 40%
Pico-Robertson is about 80% Jewish (Next to Beverly Hills)
Little Ethiopia has significant Ethiopian and Eritrean, percentage unknown.
Historic Filipinotown (Echo Park) is only 25% Filipino, but like nearby Little Armenia, its a revival cultural hub of the 70s through 90s.

Armenians started out in Pasadena and moved to next to Hollywood.

But it's not hell.  I think it's how ethnically diverse cities grow when it's largely driven by foreign immigration.

That was one of my favorite parts of living there. Going to all these ethnically diverse (sometimes progressive and revitalized)  neighborhoods all in a relatively small area of Downtown and Central LA. Relatively still takes an hour though.

I think diversity is the found in choice-segrated centers of population when enough civil liberties remain intact.  Diversity is found in 9 individual centers of culture all living adjacent to each-other.

Now, Armenians dont move to Little Armenia because its where Armenians are supposed to live, they go because its fun, everyone is sister and brother, and they can afford it because they own every fucking liquor store, corner mart, and gas station.
