I think we're pretty safe ruling out professional hitman. Someone like that would never leave their weapon to be found, along with ammo still in it that would give them fingerprints. Dumping that rifle marked them as a panicked amateur just looking to put as much distance between them and the crime scene as fast as possible.

Real pros use diversions especially "perfect" evidence that's obvious and easy like all this is so far, including the "shot". Reeks of an Iran M.O.I.S. assassination operation.
