A private jet has crashed and and burst into flames at the state Ville regional airport in North Carolina killing at least five people. The aircraft is a 1981 Cessna reportedly owned by NASCAR driver Greg Biffle there is a major emergency operation at the airport, it looks like the plane crashed while trying to take off from the Statesville airport.

Multiple sources and local media report that NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, along with his wife and children, were aboard the private Cessna Citation II that crashed earlier today at Statesville Regional Airport, North Carolina.

Witnesses say the jet had just taken off when a loud noise was heard, prompting an attempt to return for an emergency landing before the crash.?

Man, Biffle was instrumental in helping Western NC by using his helicopter after the massive hurricane damage, all on his dime.

@WSOCTVreporting that the plane is registered to Greg Biffle - who was has a pilot's license and ran emergency relief flights to Western NC after #HurricaneHelene.

They were trying to go straight back. Unless it's a major emergency you don't land downwind. That maneuver at the end was to line up with the active runway and go into the wind.

A top level driver can make $10-20M a year depending on how the deal is structured.
