"A tsunami alert was issued for Hawaii and Alaska after an 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Kamchatka in Russia.

 A tsunami advisory was also issued in Japan after the quake, the Associated Press reported.
 
The National Weather Service issued a tsunami "advisory" for parts of Alaska, while Hawaii was put on tsunami "watch," according to the agency's website. Both Russia and Japan were on "potential threat" status, while the territory of Guam was on tsunami watch."

There is also a tsunami watch for Western U.S., Alaskan peninsula, and Canadian coasts, and other parts of the world. As if California does not have enough problems.

What this upgrade to 'warning' means that people should take action.

The Alaskan Aleutian Islands has an 'advisory', so they are expecting a tsunami, with a 'warning' for the remaining Island chain.

They are saying to expect waves of 3-4m in Russia and Ecuador. 1-3m in Alaska and Hawaii... Other places listed but you can go look at the NOAA at the updated advisory.

Saw that, and Hokkaido reported a 30cm wave a bit ago. They are north coast of Japan so they wouldn't be in one of the forcasted worst areas.

They mentioned a similar positioned magnitude earthquake and tsunami happened on April 1, 1946 and 156 or 159 people were killed in Hawaii.
