Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb ( the 3I/ATALS guy... ) is so confident we’ll uncover evidence of extraterrestrial life that he’s literally betting on it.

Loeb has accepted a wager proposed by Skeptic magazine publisher Dr. Michael Shermer, who argues that no confirmed proof of alien visitation will surface anytime soon. The bet states that no major scientific institution or government agency will confirm alien visitation whether via UFOs, UAPs, technological artifacts, or biological remains... by December 31, 2030.
The stakes... $1,000, with the winner donating the sum to the Galileo Project Foundation.
"Believers keep predicting that proof of alien contact is just around the corner," Shermer remarked. "Thirty-three years later, I'm still waiting." --Dr. Michael Shermer
Loeb, however, sees things very differently. He argues that the real search is only now ramping up, citing the unusual interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, the upcoming launch of the Rubin Observatory, and the construction of three new Galileo Project facilities.
"The search for technological artifacts has just started in earnest," he wrote on his blog. "It’s better to be an optimist... life is sometimes a self-fulfilling prophecy." -Avi Loeb
Which of the two will win? Hard to say...
I think 3I/ATLAS is still ranked 4 on the Loeb scale, which suggests further data is needed to confirm its technological origin.
But if the aliens are already among us, Shermer might technically be losing without even knowing it.
