A hurricane hunter captured a rare view inside the eye of Hurricane Melissa during a flight on Monday, October 27.
Incredible footage, absolutely majestic and terrifying; even more so on the ground where people can only hope and pray, she spares them.

Hurricane Melissa now making landfall in western Jamaica with 185 mph winds and a barometric pressure of 892 mb. That makes the storm the third strongest in recorded history at the time of landfall.

Very little coming out of Jamaica news. Here's a link to live cams.
Absolutely horrible. According to the Jamaica Gleaner, Elon Musk's Starlink has partnered with the Cayman Islands' telecommunications, FLOW, to "boost connectivity after Hurricane Melissa."

The eyewall has crossed Jamaica and the eyewall is less than 175 miles from the lesser Cayman Islands. They are in the outer rainbands, but not in any jeopardy. I think the forward speed increase of 8-9 miles per hour can only have helped. The wave stacking on the northern coast of Jamaica is/will likely be more than 15 feet above normal high tide.
Rip currents expected from Florida's eastern coast all the way up to Virginia. Eyes and prayers now on Cuba, Haiti, Turks and Caicos, and the Bahamas. Wicked hurricane, whose name will be retired.

On 28 October 2025, Hurricane Melissa made landfall in southwestern #Jamaica, marking one of the most powerful storms in the country’s recorded history, with sustained winds estimated at about 185 mph (295 km/h). The parish of St. Elizabeth Parish in southwest Jamaica was especially hard-hit: many homes were submerged by floodwaters, road networks were blocked by debris and landslides, and essential services were severely disrupted. Broadly across the island, major infrastructure suffered: hundreds of thousands of customers lost power (with reports of over 500,000 households and businesses without electricity). Hospitals and public buildings sustained damage; for example, four major hospitals reportedly impacted and some shelters forced to evacuate due to structural issues. Transportation infrastructure and access were compromised: blocked roads, downed power and utility lines, and isolated communities. The town of Black River faced such damage to its Emergency Operations Centre that rescue efforts were impeded. Humanitarian and Economic Concerns While the full death toll is still under assessment, early reports confirm multiple fatalities and numerous injuries across Jamaica. The tourism sector—being a significant component of Jamaica’s economy—faces disruption due to damage in coastal and resort-areas, airport closures, and damage to tourist-infrastructure. Agricultural and rural communities are vulnerable, especially in mountainous or remote regions where access is now limited and landslides occurred. Recovery efforts in these areas will likely be protracted. In light of the scale and severity of Hurricane Melissa’s impact, Jamaica now confronts a major recovery challenge. Immediate priorities include restoring power and communications, clearing and repairing transportation routes, supplying emergency relief to affected populations, and assessing full structural and economic losses. Given the magnitude of destruction, external support and international assistance may be required.
