Maybe it is US doing things quite powerful in our dreams and they are sent to guide us so we don't fail to return and maybe all those memories of anal probing are secret desires by the dreamer. 

Allot of it is clearly it, but it's real to the people, if it's "real real" doesn't matter.  For that person it happened and that will always be there for them.

I guess from this I could say this is all a bit insidious because the phenomena hides in here and I have to questions why? Sure it's the perfect hiding spot, but also wow, the things people go through and are put through.
