'Huge breach of defences': Ukraine claims to have inflicted damage worth $2bn with drone attack deep inside RussiaMore details now from Deborah Haynes, security and defence editor and Azad Safarov, Ukraine producer, on the special operation - codenamed "Web" - launched by Ukraine to target Russian bombers.
Ukraine is conducting a "large-scale" drone operation against the Russian air force, hitting more than 40 bomber aircraft across four bases deep inside Russia, security sources have said.
It appears to be the most significant operation of its kind since the start of Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine more than three years ago, and is a huge breach of Russia's national defences.
A Ukrainian government source said that the drones were launched inside Russia.
One of the targets – the Belaya airfield – is more than 2,500 miles from the Ukrainian border.
Videos shared with Sky News by Ukraine's SBU Security Service purport to show a line of Russian strategic bombers with smoke billowing out of them.
"Enemy strategic bombers are massively burning in Russia - this is the result of a special SBU operation," a security source said.
"Right now, the Security Service of Ukraine is conducting a large-scale special operation to destroy enemy bombers in the rear of Russia.
"The SBU drones are targeting aircraft that bomb Ukrainian cities every night. So far, more than 40 planes have been hit, including A-50, Tu-95 and Tu-22 M3."
At least one of the videos is purportedly of the Belaya airfield.
A voice can be heard saying in Ukrainian: "This is how nice looking now airport Belaya, strategic enemy aviation."
The codename for the Ukrainian operation is "Web".
Sources claimed to have inflicted more than $2bn (£1.4bn) worth of damage on the Russian air force.
"We are waiting for the details. And we hope that the number of hit aircraft will increase!" one source said.
The other Russian airbases targeted by Ukraine were: Diagilevo, Olenya and Ivanovo airfields.

It looks like Ukraine upped it's attacks on Russian military targets with some guile after Putins recent random targeted attacks.
Good for them and hats off to it's intelligence services and special forces for such an audacious mission.

Putins control on Russa's media and use of propaganda has managed to keep a lot of the negative aspects of the war out of the news. By striking further into Russia, it's going to be harder for Putin to control the narrative.

It could change the whole dynamics of the war in one fell swoop. Im gobsmacked at its brilliance and execution at such a low cost.

The tone of the peace talks just changed... if they are still on

BREAKING: Ukraine Just Pulled Off One of the Most Daring Strikes in Modern Warfare In what can only be described as a stunning act of covert military ingenuity, Ukraine has reportedly struck 41 Russian bombers across four separate air bases, some located as far as 4,400 kilometers from Ukraine's borders. According to reports, Ukraine secretly transported wooden mobile cabins into Russia, disguising FPV drones beneath their roofs. These cabins were mounted on trucks and parked in position, hidden in plain sight. When the signal was given, the roofs remotely swung open like something out of a sci-fi film. And then? Dozens of drones launched straight from the trucks, flying directly into the heart of Russia’s strategic air power, obliterating bombers that the Kremlin can’t even produce anymore due to sanctions and critical shortages. The implications are staggering. This kind of operation, conducted this deep inside enemy territory, using mobile disguised platforms, has never been done before. Not at this scale. Not with this level of impact. Russia just lost a significant chunk of its long-range bomber fleet. And unlike missiles, bombers aren’t quickly replaceable.

I think drones have just demonstrated themselves to be the newest MERV ICBMs.

What is to stop a country from shipping a container full of drones to their enemy then attacking from that container?

Very interesting times we live in. The mushrooms are now mostly obsolete, and the mouse has roared very loudly.
I know too much and question everything.
Does anyone know the minimum safe distance of ignorance?
Did anyone ask the monkeys how much fun the barrel actually was?

Ukraine says at least 40 Russian warplanes hit in massive drone strikeshttps://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1ld7ppre9vo
Quote:Ukraine claims to have hit more than 40 Russian warplanes at several military airfields, in what appears to be one of the most audacious drone attacks so far on Russian aviation.
According to a statement from Ukraine's security service, SBU, "enemy strategic bombers are burning en masse in Russia".
The SBU says Ukraine is conducting "a large-scale special operation aimed at destroying enemy bomber aircraft."
Dramatic footage has emerged purportedly showing a drone attack at Belaya airbase in Irkutsk oblast, Siberia, thousands of miles from Ukraine.
Russia's military has not commented on the issue.

Worrying times.

Not necessarily.  The most recent version of the doctrine allows use of a nuclear response to a conventional attack that “poses a critical threat to sovereignty or territorial integrity”. This probably doesn’t rise to that level.

Thanks.  Hope not but I bet there will be a strong response.
