Plane crash in philidelphia.
#21
They’ve recovered both engines, but are looking for the CVR. The site covers about six blocks, so they will have a big area to search.

The Cockpit Voice Recorder was recovered 8 feet below ground at the impact site.

8 feet through an asphalt/concrete surface street, sounds as if it hit at a velocity much more than a free fall

It was at roughly 125 mph vertically, not including forward speed. That’s a lot more than free fall.

In a nose dive, don't you throttle back? Did they have a mechanical failure with the directional controls and the engine?

If you’re aware that you’re in a dive. If it was spatial disorientation they wouldn’t have realized it until they came out of the cloud cover, about two seconds before impact.

I think where Im going with this is, to look at the angle when they came out of the clouds. If they were at that angle for longer than 5 seconds in the clouds wouldn't it be obvious AH? Their seatbelts would be holding them in the cockpit seats at that angle of entry.

Between this and the DC crash, it isn't very pleasant to think about, my family and I fly a lot.

And I know all the statistics and sayings and its relatively safe as hell but still

Spatial disorientation really messes with you. Without a reference point to see you can’t rely on feeling. If your harness is tight you aren’t really going to feel yourself hanging against the straps, but even if you do, your brain is very confused at that point so you can’t be sure what you’re feeling. That’s how you got into the situation to begin with. You felt like you were at a steeper angle up than you were, or that you were turning when you weren’t, etc.

Im just trying to wrap my head around this they had just taken off and were only at 1600' it's not as if they were at cruising altitude they still needed to ascend a lot don't they usually want to climb up to cruising altitude? They were still in take-off mode
and wouldn't a Medevac jet likely have warning systems with such a rapid drop in altitude?

That area of Philly is well-lit at 1600'
Meteorological data recorded by the National Weather Service indicated the presence of light rain, overcast and foggy conditions, and a 30 mph (50 km/h) wind gust recorded just prior to 6 p.m. in Philadelphia.[sup][5][/sup] Visibility was estimated at 6 miles (10 km).[sup][9]

They were doing a climbing turn into a cloud deck. There was no visible horizon or lights for them to see. They have instruments, but by the time GPWS went off they wouldn’t have had time to recover at that speed.
