Delta plane flips over while landing in Toronto
#1
LOCAL NEWSDelta plane flips over while landing in Toronto from Minneapolis Emergency crews are responding to a crash involving a Delta Air Lines plane that arrived Monday at Toronto Pearson Airport from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
The FAA says all 80 people on board Flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, were evacuated. CBS News has confirmed that there are injuries. Some have been transported to hospital, though it's unclear how many were injured or hospitalized, and the nature of the injuries are unknown.
The FAA says the investigation will be led by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA issued the following statement: "AFA crew were working this flight. Reports are there are no fatalities. Please do not speculate on this incident as everyone works to gather information and support those involved."
Monday's incident occurred just weeks after a deadly mid-air collision between an American Airlines plane and an Army Black Hawk helicopter at Reagan National Airport in Washington D.C. Officials said everyone on both aircraft perished.

Crosswinds out of limits (wind from 270, runway heading 230), plane crossing in front of the ILS causing a bump in the glideslope, and the right wing hit the ground as they landed.
Logic is dead. Long live BS.

That would definitely do it.

On top of the horror of a crash landing.
I cannot imagine being felted into a seat upside down.  The difficulty in unfastening it against gravity.  Then that same gravity making it VERY hard to make a soft landing.

Looks like they hit hard on the right main and it collapsed. The left wing is at least mostly intact, and left main is still in place, but the right main appears to be missing.

I watched an interview with one of the passengers, a paramedic, who when he unfastened his seat belt (while being upside down) fell to the ground/ceiling, then proceeded to help others. He was being interviewed hours after this accident and the interviewer told him she could smell fuel on him.

There are multiple injuries, but everyone survived and that's great.

He did state that one minute they were landing, then it was announced that the winds were an issue, then he was upside down.

It was also mentioned that the seats on that plane were designed so as not to move, or rather come unattached.

The question being asked is whether the airport should have been shut down due to the weather.

I thought the same thing, Ive been flying before and had problems getting my seatbelt undone in normal conditions. At my weight Id probably break my arm at best .

Any landing you can walk away from...

What is wild is it looked like the rolling over tore off the wings and the fuel tanks as the fuselage skidded down the runway away from the explosions and fire

It was a hard landing. A 3 degree glideslope, which is normal, has a descent rate between -300 and -500 fpm. The last data point from this flight showed a -1,024 fpm descent rate with several points around that same vertical speed. They would have been ok with just the hard landing, maybe some airframe damage and an inspection, but right before they touched down the right wing dropped and hit the runway.
