Nah you can shit on me like the other poster did.

I've always felt that disparaging vets tells more about the person speaking than it does about the vet.
You must develop the ability to be disliked in order to free yourself from the prison of other people's opinions.

I don't know, nor do I care.

Rather than turn to the feel-good commiseration over this exchange... it might be best to leave it to lie as another example of being hateful to strangers... no matter who they are, or what they have done... a sign-post of bias, if you will.

Well since the topic is about the lack of American pride...
Um ...

Here's another passage from Steinbeck:
Quote:... To most of the world success
is never bad. I remember how, when Hitler moved unchecked and
triumphant, many honorable men sought and found virtues in him. And
Mussolini made the trains run on time, and Vichy collaborated for the
good of France, and whatever else Stalin was, he was strong. Strength
and success—they are above morality, above criticism. It seems, then,
that it is not what you do, but how you do it and what you call it. Is
there a check in men, deep in them, that stops or punishes? There
doesn’t seem to be. The only punishment is for failure. In effect no
crime is committed unless a criminal is caught. In the move designed for
New Baytown some men had to get hurt, some even destroyed, but this in
no way deterred the movement.

It looks like I'm about 2/3 through with the book.
There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people. - Commander William Adama

Earlier you included Oskar Schindler in this group:
"I am talking about the likes of Mother Theresa, Oskar Schindler, Mahatma Ghandi, Florence Nightingale... etc.

These humanitarians are exceptional."

Are you aware that Schindler was a Nazi intelligence officer before acquiring (confiscated from Jewish founders) the enamelware factory? He also was manufacturing ammunition for the Nazi war machine. In later life it became evident that he had no real skill in running a business. He lived off of the Jews he had rescued.
See: The Parable of the Shrewd Manager (Luke 16:1-9).

He saved 1,200 people - at great risk to himself.

Quote:There is a system. In peacetime people join the military 'cuz it's a job. When they get out, they are veterans. Didn't John the Baptist tell the soldiers something like "Don't extort, and be content with your wages."?

In the end we get old and get cut from jobs and lose benefits because "DEI is bad" they say.

... and, do you think that Trump has replaced those DEI hires he has removed from employment, with the best qualified people?

I mean, take a look at Trump's current top staff picks. Almost none of them have any experience, nor education, nor proven skills for the roles he has them in. And they keep stuffing up, too (wonder why?).

I clearly wrote "many" not "all".

Quote:Regardless of which country you live in (and frankly I honestly don't give a shit), soldiers have defended your country and you owe them your respect.

Soldiers have also been the ones threatening my country. That sort of balances things out.

But here's something - I'm not sure that my country of citizenship, nor my country of residence nor the United States has ever been seriously threatened.

Was the US defending itself in Korea? Vietnam? Iraq? Yemen? Afghanistan? Philippines? Pakistan? Somalia? Libya? Uganda? Burkina Faso? Mali? Niger? The Democratic Republic of the Congo? South Sudan? The Central African Republic? Syria? Gaza? Ukraine? Lebanon? (That's a lot of wars to be in, and that's only since the late 20th Century).

Quote:You would place veterans as about the same level as serial killers.   You are trying to trigger people into saying things that will get them actioned.   I think that is a bullshit way of doing things.   I will not be so triggered, however I will say that I wish you get that which you deserve.   I wish the same for myself.

I'm trying to look at things clearly and without any particular bias. What I am seeing is a history of a lot of conflict, resulting in a lot of bloodshed, for very very little, or no advantage at all, to anyone.

I am not calling for retribution, because that simply feeds into more conflict.

I am calling for Gandhi like pacifism and for the dissolution of the death-meme of a nationalism that calls for attack, defence and subsequent reciprocal attacks without limit and without end.

Is this the bit where we attack Gandhi for being a pedophile and a hypocrite racist?

Flipflopping:

I'm a pro-DEI sort of guy.
Makes me a progressive, leftist.
Back in Woodrow Wilson's(Dem) day, he was the KKK
while the Republicans were the progressives.

I saw a meme, don't remember which of the many faux pahs it concerned, but the wording was "Aren't you glad we have meritocracy?"

Why?:
Ability to flip to supporting the Leader. JD Vance is one of those who called Trump "the Hitler of our time." So a little amoral speech adjustment makes him perfect for the job. Former personal attorneys, media and social media influencers are "the best people" chosen by the guy who "knows the best people".
