UPS MD-11 crash
#1
UPS flight 2976, an MD-11 going from Louisville to Honolulu crashed on take off. The aircraft had 280,000 pounds of fuel, and three crew on board. Reports are that the aircraft suffered an uncontained engine failure. Video shows a significant fire in the left engine as they’re rolling down the runway. The aircraft barely gets airborne before the left wing drops and the aircraft crashes.

The aircraft came down through a residential area. Evacuation and shelter in place orders have gone out. Video and images show the initial impact was a warehouse just outside the airport. There is significant damage to the roof across a portion of the roof, with the impact occurring past the warehouse area.

Officials are now reporting three fatalities, and eleven injuries, with that number expected to grow.

It appears that the left engine physically separated from the wing on the take off roll. This is an unconfirmed picture of the engine on the runway.

Warning, this video is really bad to watch. This is supposed to be video from a truck dash cam that was parked in the area.

Taking a closer look at the take off video of them on the runway, the #2 engine has a compressor stall after rotation. There's a brief flash through the smoke after the aircraft nose comes up. If it did, then there was no way to save the aircraft with two engines having problems, and a full load of fuel and cargo. The aircraft also was delayed for over two hours, reportedly for maintenance on the left engine.

Death toll has risen to seven now. Four people on the ground are reported dead, in addition to the three crew on board.

The death toll now stands at nine. Sixteen families reported missing members overnight.

The airport is reopening, but 17R/35L, which was the runway they used, will stay closed until the 15th.

Just found this on the 'Tube. I like the way he explains it.

Current count is 9 dead, 15 transported with 13 treated and released, the other two are critical, and 16 unaccounted for. The NTSB will have their first briefing this afternoon from Louisville.

So sad.
Condolences to the families and friends of the victims and wishing the souls of the deceased some peace in this horrible time.

UPS has had a lot of issues lately with performance, timeliness.

Their rates for shipping have gone up a huge amount the last year but also their losses and damages have increased a bunch, so that for work we were told to stop using them internationally altogether.

Then I heard they are switching their drivers to contract drivers like Amazon (not sure if all, most or what). so I am wondering if cost cutting practises and other corporate decisions effected this plane's maintenance or helped cause it to crash.

The NTSB has recovered both data recorders. They also confirmed that the engine separated from the wing, saying that they have video showing the engine separating from the wing.
