I just can't watch any more plane crashes, it's just so disturbing.

Today's NTSB update:

· CVR and FDR flown overnight to Washington and data extracted at NTSB’s lab
· NTSB confident in the extraction of data from both recorders
· Engine fan blades recovered from on the airfield
· Engine #1 (left wing) recovered to secure storage facility

Today's briefing from the NTSB:

At 37 seconds after take off thrust was applied a persistent bell was recorded on the CVR that continued 25 seconds until the end of the recording.

The bulk of the left engine pylon was still attached to the engine when it separated.

The death toll is up to 13, with 8 still missing.

UPS and FedEx have both temporarily grounded their MD-11 fleets (somewhere around 53 aircraft between the two) for safety inspections.
#27
Fan blade failure causing massive vibration .. I could have flown the DC-10 (more money) but I never cared for the aircraft even after the fixes were done.

Captain Steve's analysis of the fan blade shrapnel from the left engine disintegration hitting the right engine and causing a compression failure make a lot of sense as to why the aircraft could not achieve any lift. The rear #2 could not pull it off by itself. The poor pilots had no chance. God speed to them as well as the poor souls on the ground that had no chance as well.

From the video, it was the #2 that compressor stalled to my eye. The #2 on both the DC-10 and MD-11 are susceptible to FOD, or airflow disruption.

The FAA expanded the Emergency Airworthiness Directive to include the DC/MD-10 as well. It’s the same vague “inspect for something and repair as necessary before next flight”.
