There's another one below from Argentina and apparently multiple witnesses saw a 'gigantic sausage-shaped' object over the power station before the blackout.

A considerable part of the Department of Anta was left in the dark after midnight following a blackout which occurred at the same time dozens of witnesses reported seeing a UFO over the city of Joaquin V. Gonzalez.

In that instance, Daniel Barbosa, director of Radio Uno, told El Tribuno "that according to eyewitness accounts, the craft was gigantic, sausage-shaped and fully illuminated."

Citizens stated that the object flew over the power station for some minutes. "We were surprised that people from all over the city coincided in the description. Even stranger is that a blackout occurred."

The event occurred in 1995 at Serranía Colorada in the municipality of Joaquin V. Gonzalez. The details were never officially disclosed. Vegetation never again grew at the location and it remained closed off. The national police and the Argentinean Air Force invoked "reasons of national security".

Suppose if it was a Chinese bomb (sausage shaped or not) there'd be some form of debris and no reports of objects hanging in the air for prolonged periods.

Would suggest the devil is in the details when it comes to all these reports and always best to examine the thread content.

Looks like just with the USAF establishing the UFO nuclear connection back in the 1950's there's been recognition of an 'electrical' one for decades.

Here's what engineer James McCampbell had to say about the subject back in the 1970's - he also brings up multiple sightings in New Hampshire where objects were witnessed over transmission lines, apparently a 'pipe like object' emerged from the base and actually touched the lines.

An association between UFOs and electrical power facilities has been recognized for many years. UFOs tend to hover near generating stations, switchyards, and substations, and to travel along the rights-of-way for high-voltage transmission lines. They are frequently seen at these locations at the time of, or just prior to, electrical blackouts over extended areas served by the facilities. Naturally, blame for the inconvenience is laid upon the UFOs, but satisfactory explanations have not been found. The deficiency is twofold: The affinity of UFOs for electrical facilities is not well understood and their method of causing power failure has not been satisfactorily identified.

During the fall of 1966, a series of UFO sightings in southern New Hampshire attracted the attention of a famous journalist who conducted a thorough, on-the-spot investigation. Armed with portable tape recorders, he collected testimony from many witnesses, some of which was later published verbatim. In 73 separate testimonies, a direct relationship was reported between the UFOs and the power lines of the Northeast Grid. (14) The UFOs typically appeared at low altitude near the transmission lines, alternately rising and falling behind the trees. On more than one occasion, a "pipe like object came down from the base of the disc and actually touched the lines, remaining there for a minute or so."

Tamal’-Type UFO Blamed for Blackout

An unidentified flying object (UFO) using what officials describe as a ‘tractor beam’ sapped electrical energy from the Arenal hydroelectric plant early Thursday morning [2 April 1992], causing a nationwide blackout that lasted half an hour, officials said.

‘It was the most incredible thing I ever saw,’ said Arenal plant manager Ingenuo Tomapelo. ‘The thing just hovered there for several minutes shining this tractor beam down onto the main generator.’

Tomapelo said he witnessed the event from the window of the plant’s control room where he watched helplessly as the gauges registered dropping energy output.

‘It looked like a tamal, just like the kind my grandmother used to make, except that it glowed,’ said Tomapelo. ‘They drained all our power in a matter of minutes.’

Had a feeling you'd pick up on that one mate and don't know what's going on with this pylon malarkey but there was a study a while back which concluded the predominant. UFO odor descriptors were 'sulfidic, pungent and foul'.

Developed a sudden interest in sulfur smells, fancy that. Download the PDF will still look at it. I did find it's plausible for the insulation to burn and other materials and sulfur being a dominant smell from just 

the effects could be small and still stink, including skin and hair burning. Medical stuff related to these kind of sightings would be interesting and over a period of time

Taken from the scientist UFO thread there's a freaky description below of a very strange object over Central Illinois Power Generating Station.

• "I went out by myself to take a look and there it was, hovering about 1500 feet in the air and about 200 yards from me. It was a round saucer-shaped object about 25 to 30 feet in diameter. It looked like a high-intensity red light with a lot of lights coming out of what seemed to be portholes.

The lights were flashing and causing a spinning effect. I couldn't see any image of its bottom, which may have been concave, I'm not sure. I kept walking and got to within 100 yards of it. I looked at it for two or three minutes until it darted behind the power plant almost like a blur. I went north of the power plant to see where it had gone and found it hovering over a water intake pump on the other side of the station.

I stood there for a couple of minutes and watched it. The most amazing part is the way this object moved rapidly with no effort and perfectly silently. I just can't get over that. I don't know what it was but I know this much: we don't have anything like this."

Ah yes mate can't remember if you've read Cutchin's book but it's rather good - also curious that the 'sulfidic, pungent and foul' descriptors are often used in cryptid and poltergeist cases.

Don't know what to make of this case but there was a truly bizarre object witnessed over (and under) power lines in Matadepera, Spain on January 29th, 1969.

Apparently the UFO emerged from the trees and was described as metallic and brightly coloured in green and yellow ('beautiful' to look at) - there were also highly unusual landing traces and the artist rendition can be found in the vid.

Thought this chap was pretty sincere and he describes a close range sighting of a 'big, humongous object as bright as a light bulb' taking power from the electricity lines - he also states there was some kind of wire leading from the object onto the power cables.

Apparently after the object departed the power lines were 'all lit up' making the surroundings 'even brighter than daytime'.

Good question and definitely one to ponder - apparently the first high voltage line was in Germany in 1891.

Lots more of these cases than I initially realised and below are two more from Costa Rica - there are also official police reports and UFO sketches from separate incidents during the 'flap'.



1980:

Costa Rica UFO Dossier 

The whole country was affected by a power blackout shortly after midnight on January 21. Another memo by a police Sergeant reported that during the blackout, “I observed an unidentified flying object in space, a very powerful beam of light descending towards the ground.”

Yet another police officer from Belén informed his precinct had received that night a report from a “Mr. Rodriguez, who saw the descent of a luminous object with flashing white and red colored beams; the light was so strong that it didn’t leave a shadow and illuminated everything totally. The object had a crackling noise, making noise as it emitted these beams; it was like turning on a TV set without the image and noise on the screen, but it was a strong noise. Mr. Rodriguez was coming from Puntarenas and his truck lights went off about 100 meters from his house.” Other witnesses saw the phenomenon too, and the police officer added that experts from “the power plants in Belén were unable to explain the blackout since everything was working perfectly.”

1992:

A similar incident occurred during another power blackout on April 1, 1992. According to Carlos Vilchez, who investigated the case, “from 35 to 40 police cars described something they were observing from different points of view; there was a blackout and there was also one stalled police car when the object flew above it.” Although no official documents were released, several police officers described to the media a large, multi-colored domed disc seen in the sky during the blackout.
