The rhetorical battle between Donald Trump and his Democratic Party opponents over the use of troops on the streets of American cities runs the imminent risk of turning into real, physical conflict, and potential civil war between federal agents who report to Washington and local law enforcement.
Unless restraint is exercised over the next few days, or the White House starts adhering to court orders, tempers on the streets of Chicago and Portland are likely to rise into the danger zone.
Already, there are deeply worrying signs about growing antagonism between the masked agents of Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and local police and other emergency services.
 
In Chicago over the weekend, ICE agents tear-gassed members of the Chicago Police Department amid clashes with protesters. The move appears to have been accidental, but it is a sign of the chaos, confusion and risk that now exists as demonstrators try to stem the tide of Trump’s mass deportation drive.
With ICE using tear gas, pepper spray and occasionally rubber bullets, at least half a dozen Chicago police officers were left coughing, rubbing their eyes and seeking treatment for the effects of the chemical agent during Saturday’s protests outside the Broadview Detention Centre.
Broadview is rapidly becoming ground zero for attempts by demonstrators to undermine the efforts of ICE agents to sweep people off the streets without warrants or reasonable grounds for suspicion.

On Sunday, the city’s police department accused ICE agents of wasting its officers’ time by making a series of fake calls to the city’s emergency services and reporting that the Broadview facility was coming under attack, when it was not.
The local CBS television station started investigating the calls after one of their cameramen – the only person present outside the building at the time – was approached by police responding to a 911 call.
Thomas Mills, the local police chief, called the ICE agents’ behaviour “disturbing” and “ridiculous”, and is threatening to bring criminal charges against the agents who placed the calls.
He said police are being goaded into attending the building unnecessarily, as protestors argue ICE agents are deliberately trying to foment confrontations there.
“The relentless deployment of tear gas, pepper spray and mace at the ICE facility is endangering nearby village residents”, said Mayor Katrina Thompson of Broadview. She argued that the brutality of the federal agency’s operations in her Chicago suburb was “harming police officers, harming firefighters and American citizens exercising their First Amendment rights”.

The article brings up some alarming points. It wouldn't take much to cause a flash point between ICE and local police, and things could take a very serious turn for the worse.
Then there's also the fact that ICE seems to be goading the police into responding and waste time and resources.

Raw milk is illegal to sell interstate but otherwise unrestricted federally as I understand it. Certain mushrooms are Schedule I and prohibited to possess or sell even within a state. As far as I can tell there is no federal law restricting physician-assisted suicide? Interstate gambling operations are illegal under federal law. Certain prostitution-related activities such as trafficking are also illegal.

So what are you suggesting? That federal authorities should have the authority to ignore Congress and decide for themselves what "should" be illegal or not, and what laws are too much bother to enforce?

If Congress wants to give law enforcement such discretion, they do. If they don't, they don't. There are many cases where they do! For example, when enforcing environmental law, for polluting companies. The EPA may choose to act, is the language Congress gave. Or going after tax cheats, the IRS themselves have discretionary authority to enforce. Same with money laundering operations, by law the DOJ is given the power to decide whether to enforce or not. And the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, they "may" seek penalties or other remedies. The law says they don't have to.

So that should apply to everything though? Just convince law enforcement to offer up the excuse "we're too busy", and there's no such thing as the mandate of law any more? I think you can see how that would be, um, somewhat corrupt?

But okay. Think that. It doesn't matter, the law is clear: commercial operations distributing illegal drugs are illegal. If the state governments has been bought by marijuana cartel money to look the other way, they are corrupt, and it's no surprise those states are going they way they are. Shut down the dispensaries.

Portland is low-key confined to a few hundred protesters just at peak times when the checks clear, if Portlanders aren't freaking yet 

Chicago whole different animal, much more gang-related. A foreign criminal gang took over a complete apartment complex. Certain areas of Chicago need this

Yeah if anyone actually looks at the videos from Portland it's a small bunch of pot-hippies still fighting the #resistance alongside a handful of catmoms looking for somewhere to let their heart bleed. The violence is things like shining lights at ICE trucks and raging with pseudo-clever protest signs around a paper-mâché guillotine. The actual violent Antifi radicals, the meth ones, are holding back until things spice up a bit and they can weave themselves into the chaos. It's always the useful peaceniks who give them cover. They'll be out throwing bricks and blocking streets with guns, like they did in 2019, as soon as the local population gets fired up enough to give them cover. Don't confuse the clowns for the circus.

The real malfeasance is the political apparatus at the State and local levels that has bought in to, or been bought out by, activist and criminal interests opposing the rule of law.
