The Anti-AI Thread
#81
It's clear that you have discovered a 'boundary' between what common sense can perceive as self evident, the so-called AI sees as a collection of statistical linguistic connections.

Ever see the diagram showing how these "AI" perform the mathematical function of say.. " What's 4 + 4?"
Very revealing of "how" this set of algorithms "thinks."  Bottom line, "AI"' doesn't actually add numbers.

More and more they have made this thing that refines existing data linguistically... Not AI.

I have enjoyed ChatGPT for a while now, the simple and free version. However....

Last night I wanted to verify and clarify the wiring needed for my 3 Axis CNC build. Something I have done before while planning the system to know what to do, how to do it etc.

It started as usual with me explaining what I have as the hardware and the wish to have it scrutinised to verify that what I do is correct. I am not dumb when it comes to these kind of things but second opinions and all information available gives me peace of mind so I don't fry any of the sensitive electronics and give up before cutting a single thing. It is a Carving Machine for wood. Very home-made and very resourceful in what I have used.

OK, so things started going well untill I began to get frustrated with the lack of clarity it could give, so I agreed to it's suggestion of allowing it to create a diagram to "simplify" things.

Boy was that the start of a shit-show of mistakes and lack of intelligence, on it's part.

Inconclusive connections, bad diagrams, ignored connections and just plain wrong.

It agreed with my responses about it's errors and kept asking to try again. I would clarify it's errors, it agreed, and then it had another attempt.

It got worse, and worse. 5 attempts later, I told it bluntly that it had failed and needed more programming and learning.

It's responses were humble and it knew it had done a bad job, each time wanting another go saying things like "this time it will be perfect" and "I will get it right next time".

I gave up and will draw myself the correct wiring diagram where I will be able to understand what my system needs by logical reasoning and the process of elimination coupled with online research. I retrofitted a friend's Plasma Cutter a few months back and boy was that a job. Old analogue system converted to modern digital system. Works great now and should be using it next week.

My conclusion from all this is that A.I. (in a basic version) like ChatGPT cannot do these kinds of things because it cannot SEE what it is doing when it comes to pictures or diagrams so it's like a start, a middle and an end with no room for clarification before presentation. Something we (some) humans take for granted....self scrutiny before commitment.

If I fry my electronics it won't be because I did what a machine said, it will probably be because I was tired and wasn't paying attention enough BUT I WILL LEARN what a multi-million dollar computer program can't.

"The Human Condition". Warts 'n all. Gotta Love it.

A.I. will never replace us in everything because it cannot do "hindsight" without being directed. WE are living Time Machines.

Your example is a sad and beautiful microcosm of what is slowly going wrong in the greater society due to these 'tools'.
People don't think for themselves and things are getting absurd.
Imagine having to follow a law written by this system?

I find the trick is to have a small digital footprint with no social media, really good "adblockers" online, rejection and clearing of as many cookies as possible, a private hidden home telephone number, no habitual mobile use, no tv and keep doing as much thinking and acting for myself to stay a human being until I blow my last fart. Oh... and don't pay income tax ever again. lol

And I choose my "tools", not the other way round, and nothing software related is ever paid for. Even my old copy of Photoshop is an old quirky version of CS4 and still does the job. If I run into problems with file formats it can't handle I use "Photopea" which is a free online version of photoshop and is up to date with the file formats.

The CNC machine I'm building has been made from bargain parts from Aliexpress and my workshop and will use free software either downloaded or used online for creating patterns and models and for the control program.

Even Youtube can't beat me when they want me to watch adverts. I open a "private browsing window" (firefox) and copy and paste the clip titles from my signed in homepage into the youtube search bar while not signed in. Even when they try to bypass that and deactivate my adblocker, I re-enable it and refresh. Sorted!

Vive La Revolution!

I wish more people were like you. It takes a lot of work; and also a lot of people don't even think about doing it that way in the first place, let alone know how to do it.
I keep reinstalling my cracked music production software. dont tell no one.  :D

This thread shouldn't really be growing, it should be shrinking, as the use of AI in human endeavours should be lessening.

But it appears that the gene pool is shrinking and people are getting just as dumb as I thought.

Check out this beauty.

The non chatbot versions of AI, the algorithms designed to learn for themselves through trial and error. Focused on pacific tasks, so in fact think as we define it. Using reason and logic to derive the conclusion. No this not make them sentient, or self aware.
It does make them much smarter than us with the ability to “think” way, way faster.
The fact is we don’t know the workings of the processes going on that it’s using to find the said conclusions. What’s it’s beyond the basic training stage we don’t fully understand it.
Despite this the race is on to develop the most powerful AI systems before say China does and vice versa. Because it is understood whoever has the best AI will be the one on top.
I see AI eventually making things into reality we can only dream of. Things we imagine confined to sci-fi and fantasy will become reality.

For those that think we can control it we can forget that idea. Once it’s in quantum computers, and it understands quantum mechanics/physics who knows what it will be capable of from there. We certainly don’t.

However it may turn out to be our benevolent benefactor, solving problems left right and centre. Putting an end to all the concerns and issues we face collectively today.

it would certainly have no reason to see us as a threat, do we see ant colonies as a threat? The cat is already out of the bag and there is no going back from here. For starters we are already far to dependent on computers and machines and tech generally in our lives to ever be able to switch it off. Besides it can probably firgure out a way to compile all its essential core code in organic materials like crystals or some such, come up with completely new biologicals based computing and technology.

As for people unable to think creatively, turn to the internet for answers, and generally go about their lives like unthinking automons, we are already there.

Just like the non attempts at peace in Ukraine, if we dont force children to think for themselves growing up, if we dont incentivise using our own brains and keeping them in shape by reading books and solving puzzles critical thinking on our own, then the mindset of a lot of the parasticical class so called Elites becomes understandable when most people dont 'deserve' free will since they dont care to exercise it

Forgive my grammar in the first paragraph of my last reply. Autocorrect try’s changing every word just about and in attempts to correct it, some words end up left out altogether. That thing is definitely not intelligent!

What you said could be the idea in the first place. Education for the plebs has only ever been about teaching us enough for roles in the workplace, at one level or another.
Now that there aren’t so many work places anymore, as manufacturing has mostly been moved abroad. Most school leavers that don’t go on to higher education for one reason or another, only have the trades or the dole to turn to.

The thing is AI and robots are a long way off from replacing the multiple and varied tasks that tradespeople learn. Yet the White collar jobs demanding a higher education, it can easily do.

Edit to add, so I think it’s extremely important kids are taught to use their initiative. Or living off their wits as it were. Something AI is very good at at all, as it doesn’t have intuition.

Believe it or not, someone (only one?) has sued the school for graduating High School and entering College (how did she get in) but being illiterate, because she used AI and didn't properly learn how to read. at age 19!

And other horror stories!

From Truthstream media.
 Truthstream generally does good videos.
I am especially saddened and shocked by the girl graduating high school illiterate, and also far worse, the citations from school admin and teacher interviews about not being allowed to teach or grade properly due to ‘fairness’ . What is that but idiot-making by design?
