If you read the dialogues like you claimed, you would know that Critias got the story 3rd hand (via his grandfather) from Solon, who had himself gotten it from the Egyptians around 500 BC.
The Egyptians had been writing quite well for over 2,000 years at that time.

Admittedly, the answer to your question will come from a pay grade far superior to mine ,but, at any rate...

There is no escaping the fact that our ancient history has been skillfully hidden from mankind.  It is primarily hidden by what might be called "Gate Keepers".  Though their roles is miner but one that is necessary to keep peoples minds in the proverbial box of the fabricated history they wish to be accepted.  Even some of the Gate Keepers themselves question the story they were given to stick to.  At any rate, the "Gates" are real.

How do you defeat a well organized system of gate control?  You "Boot Leg" other gates!  The gate keepers themselves have only control over the gates that are approved, but no control over gates else-ware.......  As they say a lie will travel around the world before the truth even gets a chance to put its shoes on... LOL  This is the power of Psychological mind control.  People always wanting to be first at some thing, anything.  So, you give them the other gates, and it goes around the world before the gate keepers even know, the game is over.  "They" got "fooled"...........  

The World has always changed by not the "Experts" given to us, but by the "Fools" who thought, for themselves, and did it anyways.......
