Russian submarine at risk of explosion in European waters after fuel leak
#21
You would think some European country could send a tanker of some kind over so they could pump the fuel into the tanker to stop an environmental disaster.  Just saying, our wars should not be interfering with stopping an environmental disaster of the seas from happening if we are civilized.

I would not accept help from ukraine though if I was Russia. Lol

A disaster would be a dead Russian sub at the bottom of the Strait of Gibraltar, with nukes aboard.

A mere fuel oil slick?  Straight-up benign in comparison.

If all the Russians need to do to get moving is dump some fuel, surprised they didn't just do it without saying anything.  "What spill?  We know nothing...".  Something does smell here and it's not diesel fumes.

Heres an update?

The news that a short-range Russian stealth hunter was circling in the Strait of Gibraltar first came to public attention on September 27. The anti-Kremlin Telegram channel VChK-OGPU reported that the 74-metre-long Kilo-class Novorossiysk “currently on combat duty in the Mediterranean” had experienced a technical failure, and that fuel was leaking into the bilge, the very bottom of the vessel hull.

As of March 2026, the Novorossiysk (B-261) is reported to be disabled and out of action following a successful Ukrainian underwater drone strike.

Current Status & Recent Timeline
  • Disabled (December 2025–Present): On December 15, 2025, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) claimed to have carried out the world's first successful strike by an uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV) on a submerged submarine. The attack, which took place while the vessel was at a pier in the port of Novorossiysk, reportedly caused "critical damage".
  • Stationary in Port: Satellite imagery from early 2026 confirmed that a Varshavyanka-class submarine (Project 636.3) remained stationary and unmoved at the Novorossiysk naval base for several weeks following the attack.
  • Limited Fleet Activity: In March 2026, Ukrainian Navy officials reported that Russian submarine operations in the Black Sea have been severely restricted, with only two submarines briefly deploying for missile launches once during the entire month.

Impact of Previous Technical Failures
The current disabled status follows a series of setbacks for the vessel:
  • Mediterranean Withdrawal (September 2025): The submarine was forced to "limp home" on the surface through the Strait of Gibraltar and the English Channel after a major fuel leak into its bilge.
  • Loss of Mediterranean Basing: Following the fall of the Assad regime in late 2024 and the subsequent loss of the Russian naval base at Tartus, Syria, the Russian Mediterranean task force effectively collapsed. This left the Novorossiysk without local repair facilities, making even minor technical failures critical.

Thanks for the update!!   Thumbup
