Before I read any of this thread or the reports, I had thought it sounded like a hit. Even in the reports, a woman in distress flagging you down on a road, sounds like the typical good Samaritan ambush trap. If it looked like she had a baby in her arms, and was leading him away from the road, that is the common ploy for this trick.
The details are nothing like what I'm talking about but it was the first thing that came to my mind. From this information provided here, it sounds like an accident and it could have happened to anyone.

A fractured vertebra could be a serious issue at 81 years old.
Dont like the dude's politics, but he's an old man. Hopefully, a speedy recovery, and he's on the mend.

Maybe whoever the woman was running from was the one that hit him.

If he had been driving whilst this happened, I would of said that maybe his hair dye had run down into his eyes causing him to lose control, but the poor guy gets a fractured vertebra from being rear ended! Ouch!

Not a fan, but to have a fractured vertebrae from a rear end shunt is really nasty, so all the best from me.
