Sean Duffy... the former reality TV star turned Transportation Secretary announced US plan to build nuke reactor on MOON by 2030 in direct challenge to Russia and China new space race.

A directive from Nasa says that such an American nuclear reactor on the moon will establish US “keep-out” zones on the lunar surface.

They say it's to further stop rivals like Moscow and Beijing from effectively colonising the Moon. 
Uh-huh… sure it is. We’ll see how that plays out.  

THE US has unveiled plans to build a nuclear reactor on the moon as it seeks to get ahead of China and Russia in the new-age space race.
The aim is to mark American territory on the lunar surface by creating a power hub that could supply energy for future missions.

“It is about winning the second space race,” said a NASA senior official, granted anonymity to discuss the documents ahead of their wider release.

The lunar south pole is the real estate jackpot: ice, minerals, Helium‑3, and near-constant sunlight... ingredients for power projection! 

I think a reactor there functions as electromagnetic turf claim... it will be a high-tech flag in the ground, a de facto land claim.

What could possibly go wrong? Just a little radioactive fallout on the Moon, no big deal…

it's already bathing in radiation whats a little more. I think it's a great idea to power a permanent base. A nice big radio telescope that always points away from earth would be a nice first project and probably serve other uses. You could build a printer that uses moon material to print other structures or even non planetary craft that could be launched easier with the lower gravity there.

Totally with you on the telescope. Getting data from something like that would be great.
But they’ll screw it up, lock it down from the public… and turn it into a Moon-based Earth surveillance dish just like everything else.

Oh yeah.. regolith printers cranking out launch pads, habitats, even spacecraft... sounds awesome! 
Crazy... hopefully all this Moon stuff moves as fast as AI tech has been lately.

How does one "claim" property on the Moon legitimately?

Who is bound to it?

Is it the first come first serve manner of a historical gold rush, is it under Admiralty Law, does the UN "claim" jurisdiction?
