'No big deal" Just an atmospheric phenomenon' some outages green energy absolved

Do you have any evidence that this power outage was directly caused by climate change?

That's how I interpreted what they were saying on the news...hot spots in some locations caused damage to the electric grid infrastructure and it makes sense. Just ask AI how hot it's gotten in those regions over time.

Spain and Portugal have overcome a nationwide blackout and successfully reconnected to the power grid, yet they remain in the dark when it comes to identifying the cause of the outage. REN, the company responsible for electricity in Portugal, board member Joao Conceicao, remarked, "There could be a thousand and one causes; it is premature to determine the exact reason." António Costa, President of the European Council, stated there were “no indications of any cyber-attack.” The question remains: what is the real cause?

I find it difficult to believe nobody foresaw this possibility, if not, it's fortuitous that it happened 12 days after switching to completely green energy

They've already fixed some of the grid, are they not able to troubleshoot what caused the damage? Do they need refresher courses in green energy?

Can extra radiation from solar winds and a magnetic field shift/weakening effect power inverters but not effect vehicle batteries and electronics and the like?

If the power went out here for a week, the wife and I would survive easily.  It would be an inconvenience, having to hook the generator to the three freezers  for a few hours each would be such a drag.  I should wire in a secondary circuit to hook to the generator so I could just start it up, plug the freezers into the secondary circuit, and run all three at one time instead of having to mess with plugging them in by extension cords one at a time.

Thought about putting a whole house generator...well, that is out of the question.  If I did that, it would be a large expenditure and add value to the house, unlocking our lower tax rate we pay.  It would over double our yearly property taxes, increasing it by fifteen hundred bucks every year.  So, as long as I just plug the appliances into a seperate generator circuit which plugs into a generator, it is considered an appliance  and does not unlock our tax reduction.  When the kids inherit the house or we sell it, let them worry about high taxes, I surely do not want to pay them when we are living on social security.

I don't know if anyone understands this, I just woke up from sleeping in my chair at the computer when playing spider solitaire.  That gave usually takes me like seven minutes, it took me an hour and a half this time.  good thing this chair is comfy...although maybe because it is is why I fall asleep in it.

Update:
- REN says the statement about the "atmospheric phenomenon" is fake. Apparently, that was the same statement that said that it would take a week for things to get back to normal;
- According to work colleagues that do not live in the same city I live in (Almada), there were some cases of lack of water or lower pressures. There were some mass buying of water and, bread;
- Everything appears to be back to normal.

Some lessons learned (by me):
- It's always a good idea to have your cell phone's battery charged. At a rate of around 1% per hour, I had enough battery for 3 days;
- Not all phone companies work the same way. Vodafone (the one I use) users couldn't make or receive calls or use any data. NOS users were able to make calls, but they weren't stable. When things started to get better NOS reduced the bandwidth available for the "normal" clients, leaving only emergency services and the like with access;
- It's no use having chargeable batteries if we don't charge them; Biggrin

Things confirmed:
- We should not trust everything we see without confirmation, and that applies to the general media, as they were saying up to 15 countries were affected, that it was a cyberattack, that it was a Russian cyberattack, that it would take 3 days (or one week) for people to get power back, etc;
- It's a good idea to be prepared. Smile

As you haven't read it all I will repeat here.

Portugal has had several days with 100% renewable energy, the longest period being 70 consecutive hours, without any problem.
Spain has nuclear power plants and they are considered renewable, although some people do not consider them "green".

Well you can't shut down a gas, oil, or coal boiler for any length of time, like years, and expect it to ever run again without an expensive rebuilding.

The corrosive chemicals from the combuation build up in the refractory cement and fire bricks in the boiler. Without the heat to keep them dry, the metal pipes are eaten away quickly when any moisture in the air gets to those corrosive chemicals.

I saw one fall apart that way after setting for 5 years. I helped replace all the tubes in it afterwords. It was a small boiler compared to the power generating ones, about the size of a house. No explosion, just started falling apart internally when I was testing it during first fire up after installiation of that used boiler. It got to about 20 pounds of pressure before hot water started pouring out and chunks of cement were going up the stack. Normal pressure was 120 psi.

That was an experience I don't want to do again.

What is your point? 70 hours is nothing. A lot of spinning generators run decades between shutdowns.

That is like saying your car ran for 10 feet so it should go across the USA without any problems.
