'Rare atmospheric phenomenon' behind huge outages in Portugal and Spain...huge area affected parts of Spain, Portugal, and France The airports have to be a mess

'Everything is in chaos' - power outages hit large parts of Spain Portugal and France
Quote:Huge power outages have hit large parts of Spain and Portugal. Airports have lost power, traffic lights and phone lines are down, the Madrid underground has been evacuated and trains have been stopped.

It's just gone 2.30pm in Portugal and 3.30pm in Spain, where large parts of the countries are without power after huge blackouts.
If you're just joining us, here's what we know so far:
  • Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao and Lisbon are among cities to have been hit by a major power outage;
  • Transport, internet services and a significant quantity of water pumps have all been affected;
  • Spanish grid operator Red Electrica says it is working to restore supplies across the country and it could take up to 10 hours;
  • Drivers in Spain have been urged not to use their cars unless necessary, and Madrid's mayor has called on residents to stay where they are;
  • French grid operator RTE says parts of the country briefly lost power, but the network is operating normally;
  • There is no indication at the moment of the cause of the outage.
Stay where you are, Madrid mayor urges residentsMadrid's mayor has called on all residents to restrict their movements where they can.
"I ask all residents of Madrid to keep their movements to an absolute minimum and, if at all possible, to remain where they are. We want to keep all roads clear," Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida said.
He also urged residents to only call emergency services if it is "truly urgent" and said they should go to police and fire stations in person if calls go unanswered.

Quote:Reports of 'panic buying' in supermarkets with many left without waterThere are widespread reports that many across Spain and Portugal have been left without running water, with many homes given access to drinking water via electric pumps - which have obviously been affected by the power outage.

A massive power cut has hit large parts of Spain and Portugal affecting public transport, traffic lights, hospitals, shops and restaurants. Reports of long queues at cash points as card payments are not working - yet another example of why cash must never be phased out.

Several people have been in touch to say they've seen people "panic buying" water and other supplies in supermarkets across Portugal and Spain.
Kye, who's in Foros de Amora to the south of Lisbon, says people rushed for cheap still water at first, but are now turning to take sparkling and expensive brands.
He shared these images from his local supermarket...

What we know has been affectedA cut to power is affecting huge swathes of Spain and Portugal, with major cities including Barcelona, Lisbon, Madrid, Porto and Seville affected.
Parts of France's Basque region was briefly caught by the outage.
Here's what we know has been affected:
  • Transport, including trains, metros and airports - with traffic lights also down;
  • Internet and mobile coverage;
  • Lighting in homes, businesses and other buildings, though backup generators are in place in many;
  • ATMs and card payments, as well as most till systems;
  • Lifts in buildings are stuck;
  • Electric car chargers and fuel pumps are also down;
  • Air conditioning units;
  • A significant quantity of water pumps, meaning some homes have no access to drinking water.

Of course they are panic buying water, which leads to my question as to why isn't the government providing water to those people that didn't or couldn't stockpile water and other necessities?

It just goes to show that some governments just are not there for the people during these types of major problems.

Could be failing infrastructures there, again the government not doing it's job. I just read that it is recommended not drinking water from the tap in hotels.

It appears there was severe infrastructure damage from flooding a few months ago.

Widespread power outages have hit several countries in Western Europe, triggering chaos as rail networks, traffic lights and communications networks went down. The shocking blackouts have impacted millions of people with almost all of Spain and Portugal affected. Some critics have claimed that Spain's integration of renewable energy sources into the European power network could have triggered the blackout. #CostOfNetZero
