And the truck in France some years ago.In one of those instances, in Magdeburg in Germany, despite the sensationalist mis-reportage and racist social media lies, the driver suffered a seizure that caused him to veer into the crowd, unable to brake. But, yes, a car can be misused as a weapon. Cars also have a lot more essential utility than firearms do. Cars are not designed for use as weapons. Firearms are designed for use as weapons.
Motor vehicles must be registered as mechanically safe and fit for purpose. Drivers must be licensed as being educated in road rules and physically capable of driving safely. If you are caught on a public thoroughfare without a valid license and registration you will be prosecuted, even if you have broken no other road rules. If you are exhibiting signs of unsafe driving (e.g. DUI) you will be prosecuted.
Similarly, it makes sense to have legislation around registration of firearms, their mechanical safety and fitness for purpose, and to license the owners/users for safety of use, storage and transport of the weapons. Any legislative system that does not endeavour to achieve the greatest safety of use, is deficient.
Quote:Australia is working on banning machetes. Where does it end, with sticks? Many can kill with a pencil. Should they be banned? What utility is a machete in an urban environment? Clearly, there are many better tools for clearing undergrowth, so that only really leaves the machete functionality as a type of sword - a weapon.
And a pencil or a stick is not a particularly effective weapon. The have not been designed as weapons. They do, however have a lot of utility in other areas.
Quote:Murder is already illegal. Making it more illegal won't matter to those that are already willing to break that law.It depends upon if you view the law as entirely punitive (getting revenge upon the bad guys) or actually functional in prevention of commission of crime. Surely someone with no access to firearms cannot shoot someone to death. Or someone removed from society cannot pose a risk to the general public.
Quote:Self defence is not negotiable.Negotiation is one effective defence. At least it will not initiate any sort of retaliatory action.
If you have a gun to defend yourself, but someone similarly armed (say a police officer) sees it and shoots you in the head pre-emptively, it is not particularly defensive for you, is it?
Quote:Edit: Americans will not join PAX until there is a reliable and safe phaser or needle stunner available. Then we will add that as a defence weapon. In many countries, self defence is is not a valid reason to obtain a firearm license.
As previously I said, any intent to use a firearm against another human being (even in defence) is criminal intention to cause harm.
This is because it isn't about who is right and who is wrong, it is about actual safety from death or injury. Even for the bad guys!
