Australia is working on banning machetes. Where does it end, with sticks? Many can kill with a pencil. Should they be banned?

Murder is already illegal. Making it more illegal won't matter to those that are already willing to break that law.

Yes, but you don't seem to be counting all the guns at those areas and events carried by police and other guards. Now if you were to pay for an armed guard to accompany everyone around 24 hours a day, things would be different.
