I hate reddit
#11
A very interesting thread I didn't have an opportunity to reply to. So here are my two cents:

Reddit is a good place to study group dynamics because it's a curious example of mob rule. Instead of a team of moderators regularly cleaning the place and the clear set of rules, you have the multitude of users creating their own subreddits and moderating them at their own whim or appealing to some mostly unwritten rules.

This decentralized form of moderation might appear more democratic at first but it quickly turns out that it's more authoritarian than traditional forums or even big social networks because apart from appeasing moderators who can ban you for merely having a different opinion, you must also please fellow members who can downvote your posts into oblivion. The math is simple; pleasing hundreds or thousands of people vs just a few.

I think it might work for some people but it got on my nerves so I spent there a couple if hours only before leaving for good. To each their own but I prefer traditional forums with old-styled moderation. Sure stars and likes or votes can be fun on condition that your "to be or not to be" on the platform depends on your obeying the site rules and not on likes or dislikes of peanut gallery.

It is a cesspit of hell with funny memes and cat pictures. Plus a few niche communities of worth hiding in their subreddits. It seems like a fun free-for-all, but when you try to participate you find you must prove your vapidness with several shitposts before anything you write will ever surface, and if you step out of the lines even once by posting in badthink subreddits, or piss off a moderator, you will find yourself quickly banned. It's fake, infested by botqueens and the sycostorms cloutfarming, a total echo chamber, and probably causes tooth decay.

Also it can be kind of fun.

I consider it a toxic site where everyone considers themselves an expert.
Everything hurts and I'm tired.

F Reddit I've never even posted there before. Went to to check out a link from ats and found out i was banned. Not even sure how that happens when you've never been there before. No loss to me really.

Peace.

I read but don't actually participate in some subreddits that are dedicated to true crime cases I am interested in.

It is annoying because I came there after I got banned from Websleuths [don't ask. I have very controversial opinions about a couple cases] and there are so many people who will go in the comments on reddit and DEFEND legit sadistic child killers.

It is way worse than Websleuths.

Everything is a conspiracy to them. Like.....of course the man who matches the DNA left on the sheath for the knife is innocent. Of course it was the female roommate who is clearly in a drug trafficking ring and murdered all her friends in the messiest way possible because they were gonna narc on her. Yeah. Right. Makes so much more sense than the surveillance tapes, DNA, GPS and phone data.

And these people will ARGUE and try and make other people feel dumb because they think the perpetrator is innocent when they are totally obviously guilty. That is why I don't participate and they do this with horrible crimes like Abby and Libby's murder and the Idaho murders. It is sickening.

Like who takes a comment like that serously?. yet fkos are postibng shit like "well I just feeeeel like I have changed dimensions" is all ok.

Like really come the revolution we'll resurrect Arron Schwartz and set the rest of the journals free.

This has nothing to do with Reddit;s IPO, unless it happend in your previous reality.

For me reddit is 80% read only...only things I participate in are subs for games I play a lot...even then my participation is minimal. Its the antithesis of what ATS used to be and what I hope DI will be and seems to be trying to be.

It has its uses but they aren't typically productive discussion and learning...unless you follow the heard.

I check the subreddits every now and then to keep up with certain groups. Not really sure why... the posts aren’t great or anything, but every so often, something pops up that makes me stop and think… WTF did I just read?

The thing with Reddit, just don’t wander too far off the beaten path... it gets weird fast.

Like another user said, there are some sub-reddits that are balanced and I'd say even friendly.  However, I've found the majority of reddit to be either absolute swine who will hate for the mere reason to hate.

Plus, there have been some seriously shady subreddits that existed for far too long before the company behind Reddit was called out for it.
And I'm gone.... Like a crack in the past....
