He might have intelligence info saying China or Russia are expanding in that area. That could easily be true. He knows that China has the corner on the world market for rare earth minerals and that China knows it has to have Greenlands minerals or it will break them financially. That also could be true. OR ... it could be that he just wants to make a name for himself expanding America and be in the American history books getting 'credit' for it.

Only time will tell.
