ETA : Do I hear some Satriani influence in there ?
Oh yeah, hey man, I remember you! Ain't dead yet, just have a bit more time on my hands since I retired.
Umm yeah, Satriani, Holdsworth, Vai, Jean-Luc Ponty, all stuff I love. All real instruments, composition and recording took quite a while!

In Philly, I had a few different scenes to choose from.
Hip-Hop / Rap feat.Roots and JBM types, some artists people know. Mostly Sigma Sound and Ruff House. who had like 9/10 Top Songs at once.
NYC was pretty lit. Friend was a mega promotor who gave me VIP to Daft Punk in 1997. I met Bjork on the trip. Hammerstein had Orbital and Rabbit in the Moon...vip was Beastie Boys, Bjork and JFK Jr's bachelor party. He's known for EDM taste. Only 1500 people, which was awesome.
Friends at Warner, I got the receptionist her job, she calls and says New Order is hanging out with nothing to do.... I couldn't make it there though. I visited the Hit Factory, across from SONY Music Studios, which was funny. When you walk in it's all very uptight corporate, but the writers rooms downstairs was like a Greco-Roman orgy with better drugs. W/Scotty I hung with Jay-Z for 2 days, riding Town Cars and shit. I actually didn't know who he was, so I talked to him like a normal person, like, hey you drank out of my beer! Went home and saw an ad for HBO Special, I'm like that's the dude from the thing! DRE used to call my mom's house for Scotty. She had her custom number from 35 years at the Phone company, so Scotty gave it to him. You didn't keep your cell number in the 1990s if you left the carrier. So mom's like, your friend Andre called....lol, super funny.
I had a crazy life, never need to make anything up. I did a bunch of uncredited stuff. Not many people know these stories. Ill give up a Scotty story (I have at least 3 that nobody knows) To get a foot in the door at Sigma Sound, Scotty had to produce a workout video to Saturday Night Fever. I shit you not. I learned every MF song with him, plus priceless skills.
Sigma engineered SNF with dozens of gold records for it, so I guess they had the rights.
Back in Philly, my friends owned nightclubs with some tippy top DJs, in a very open and fluid scene. Think OVUM Records. HOWEVER, the best parties and times with with the Drum and Bass crowd. Philly was a hub for it, apparently. One of the ongoing clubs, Skyline was right around the corner from Sigma, so I bounced in and out...crazy. Actually, Scotty did credit me recently. He called me his brother, which was confusing. Anyway, I did miss out on Villa Ferrari and Paris Hilton. I bailed in 2000 for greener pastures.
Remember kids, the Green Key opens doors.

I say now that a song should be able to stand alone as an instrumental, before vocals are applied.
Anyway....

Shame Philly doesn't have much of a House scene. Back in my younger days there were some good spots to go, but I have no idea what's out there now. Never got into D&B but for a while you heard it almost everywhere.

Yes, D&B hit Mainstream pretty hard. TV producers started using it for transitional pieces. It stems from the simple sequencers built into video game consoles. People were doing what they can at home, at the dawn of home studios. Limited to just a few steps per bar and basic samples, this is what happened. It became the soundtrack of people's lives. Some tracks I kinda like. I'm 60 now, and can basically listen to D&B until my organs liquify from the low notes.
Actually, mellow has more appeal now. Some of these tracks are very good, hard to pick a favourite. I had to stop it at On The QT, since my wife is sleeping.
There's a lesson in creativity and marketing there, with the tech being the driving factor. I believe it's the only genuine new genre in decades.
The world is a better place, because of Drum and Bass.

I remember going to the Letterman Show with The Roots and Erika Badu. I wish I could find the vid, playing You Got Me, it was one of the last songs I worked up with Scotty. Being as it were, I brought a big bag of bud for the band, who I was less acquainted with than my BFF Scotty, it was just a little gesture. So during a commercial break, David, or "Mr. Letterman", took exception to how bad the entire theatre stunk from skunk weed. I was like aww.... that was my fault.
Anyway, there was a good 5 years after 2000 I could tell Scotty's songs on the radio, just by ear.
Ill tell another "nobody knows" story.... Scotty was driving his Benz down south to Florida, in like Georgia, when a police helicopter descended on the car with patrol vehicles coming up behind. )I was NOT there) Anyway, somebody call him in for smoking weed, it was a big stop and search fiasco. They didn't find the weed, and he actually went on his way, telling me the cops failed to check the built-in drawers under the seats in the S430 I picked out, or "helped" pick out. So I got credit!
Scotty and Mike were my best friends for 10-20 years
