AI Data Centres - Do The Math.

Following on from this sobering article entitled 'On the Backs of Digital Slaves’ there's some pretty insane reading below about the exact cost (both human and environmental) of all these AI data centres popping up across the globe.

With nuclear power restarts and new buildouts years away. We pointed out on Thursday night, "Each 1GW of AI computing capacity costs $50bn to deploy in today's prices, according to OpenAI execs. By 2028, Morgan Stanley projects at least 65 GW of new data center demand.

Do the math..."

We were referring to our previous X post about power blackout risks due to the surging new power demand from AI data centers and those that will be brought online in the near-term, colliding with a fragile grid with limited spare capacity.

Apparently 'there's no way the current U.S. grid can support this' and rolling blackouts, human energy rationing and 3-4 X electricity price hikes are predicted in the near future.

Looks like authorities don't really give a toss about the environment either as AI data-centres are pumping out 135,000 tonnes of CO2 per year (same as 40,000 cars) and swallowing 17 billion gallons of water (link).

If you look at what OpenAI 'guru’ Sam Altman is openly predicting for the future then it's basically 'the Earth’s surface being tiled with data centres'.. just to power AI.

Are all these people insane?

Our world is currently being run by people who are completely detached from reality. That’s been my growing realisation as I’ve been researching tech billionaires for a book I’m writing about the Dark Enlightenment movement.

Want evidence? Just look at ‘AI guru’ Sam Altman, who – in a recent appearance on Theo Von’s podcast – explained his vision of the future: the Earth’s surface being tiled with data centres, just to power AI systems.

Then you also have to take into account all those jobs that AI is going to replace.

Channel 4 aired a special broadcast hosted entirely by an AI-generated news anchor in a surprise turn of events.
"Will AI Take My Job?" investigated how artificial intelligence has changed the way people operate in the workplace, often pitting humans against machine learning. The hour-long program came with a twist: its host was AI-generated.
The anchor, who narrated and reported in several locations throughout the broadcast was entirely artificial. At the end of the program, she revealed that, for some, AI may take their jobs before revealing she was one of them.

The special was part of the "Dispatches" documentary program, which Channel 4 says is now the first British television show to feature an AI presenter. The anchor was produced by AI fashion brand Seraphinne Vallora for Kalel Productions. Channel 4 prompted the platform to create a realistic on-camera performance from the bot anchor.

On Wednesday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei declared AI could eliminate half of all entry level white collar jobs within five years. Last week, a senior LinkedIn executive reported that AI is already starting to take jobs from new grads. In April, Fiverr’s CEO made it clear: “AI is coming for your job. Heck, it’s coming for my job too.” Even the new Pope is warning about AI’s dramatic potential to reshape our economy.
Why do they think this?
The stated goal of the major AI companies is to build artificial general intelligence, or AGI, defined as “a highly autonomous system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work.”

Stop us from destroying our environment by creating new regulatory authority which will totally keep us in check and not be subverted by us to advance our own power! Suppose the plan is then to 'enforce consent' of everyone onto UBI tokenisation platforms which means we're all screwed.

A Bloomberg News analysis found that areas near data centers saw an increase in electricity costs of as much as 267% compared to five years ago.

Also brought up is the subject of hazardous 'E-waste' where data-centres are emitting highly toxic chemicals like lead and mercury linked to 'cancer, neurological damage, and miscarriages'.

The Growing Dangers of Data Centers: What You’re Not Being Told

In 2024, the Washington State Dept. of Ecology released a report (link) showing that diesel exhaust and nitrous oxide emissions from data centers were linked to heart and lung disease. A recent Caltech study (link) estimated that by 2030, data centers would be responsible for 600,000 new asthma cases, 1,300 premature deaths, and $20 billion in healthcare costs.

In North Carolina, a suspected thyroid cancer cluster (link) near Lake Norman prompted a study by the state’s Department of Health and Human Services (link) in 2018. As of 2020, the study was still in design.

The Caltech study also highlighted Virginia, the state with the most data centers. It projected $220–300 million in annual public healthcare costs, with $190 million affecting surrounding states like West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Let’s not forget another hidden cost: e-waste. Each server component has a lifespan of about five years, after which it becomes hazardous waste. According to UC San Francisco (link), e-waste releases toxic chemicals like lead and mercury, linked to cancer, neurological damage, and miscarriages. Marginalized communities near landfills face the greatest risk.

I thought everyone switched to lead free solder. I haven't used lead solder in years. It also melts at a lower temperature. I would think that would be an advantage for surface mount chips.

I still keep a couple of rolls of the "good stuff".

SMT is usually done in a reflow oven, no need for the improved workability of lead-based solder there.
